# DACA
**Status: stub.** Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an executive action announced by [[Barack Obama]] on June 15, 2012. DACA defers removal and grants renewable work authorization to roughly 800,000 people who were brought to the United States as children ("Dreamers"). Because Congress never codified it, the program has lived in perpetual legal limbo: the first Trump administration's 2017 rescission was blocked in *DHS v. Regents* (2020) on Administrative Procedure Act grounds, and the program's legality has remained contested ever since. A recurring flashpoint in the legislation-versus-executive-action dynamic that defines modern immigration politics.
