# Christchurch Mosque Shootings
On **March 15, 2019**, [[Brenton Tarrant]] murdered 51 people and wounded 89 in consecutive attacks on the Al Noor Mosque (1:40 p.m.) and the Linwood Islamic Centre (1:52 p.m.) in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday prayers; he was arrested at 1:59 p.m., eighteen minutes after the first emergency call. He livestreamed the first attack on Facebook for about seventeen minutes and, minutes before, posted his manifesto [[The Great Replacement (Tarrant Manifesto)]] to [[8chan]]. It was the deadliest attack in modern New Zealand history and the watershed of far-right online terrorism: it fused the [[Great Replacement Theory]], the aims of [[Accelerationism (White Nationalist)]], livestream spectacle and chan-board "irony" into a template that at least fourteen later attackers copied.
## The template
Three design choices made the attack a genre rather than an event. **The livestream** turned the killing into content: fewer than 200 people watched it live, but Facebook blocked 1.5 million re-uploads in the first 24 hours and failed to stop its spread, and the footage still circulates on the platforms the [[Memes Hub]] tracks. **The manifesto** was written for two audiences — a press it baited with memes, false claims and a "subscribe to PewDiePie" joke, and a chan audience it addressed directly, with [[Great Replacement Visual Memes]], the [[Fourteen Words and 1488]], and an explicitly [[Ecofascism]]-framed argument that immigration was an environmental crime. **The weapons** were inscribed with the names of earlier killers and historical battles against Muslims — the [[Saint Culture]] lineage made literal. The [[Online Radicalization Pipeline]] page traces how the format propagated: Poway (April 2019), [[El Paso Walmart Shooting]] (August 2019), Halle (October 2019), Bærum (August 2019) and the [[Buffalo Tops Supermarket Shooting]] all cited Christchurch, and Buffalo's shooter copied the manifesto's structure nearly verbatim.
## The response
New Zealand's answer was fast and, by American standards, total. The Arms Amendment Act banning military-style semi-automatics passed Parliament **on April 10, 2019**, 26 days after the attack; a buyback collected 56,250 firearms by December. On **May 15, 2019** the Christchurch Call, convened in Paris by Jacinda Ardern and Emmanuel Macron, committed 53 governments and eight platforms to act against terrorist content online — the United States, under the first Trump administration, declined to sign. The Royal Commission of Inquiry reported on **December 8, 2020**: the attacker had radicalized largely alone online, had been in contact with [[Generation Identity]]'s Austrian leader (to whom he had donated), and had planned for years; the security agencies' near-exclusive focus on Islamist terrorism was a failure of prioritization, though no specific missed warning would have stopped him. Tarrant pleaded guilty on March 26, 2020 and on **August 27, 2020** received New Zealand's first sentence of life without parole. His attempt to withdraw the plea, on the ground that pre-trial detention had been "torturous and inhumane," was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on **April 30, 2026** as "utterly devoid of merit."
## Why the vault cares
Christchurch is the event the vault's whole political-violence layer is calibrated against. It is where the [[Great Replacement Theory]] moved from [[Renaud Camus]]'s prose to a kill count; where [[Stochastic Terrorism]] acquired its clearest case (no order given, a template supplied); and where the [[Scientific Racism]] and [[Sonnenrad (Black Sun)]] iconography of the memes pages was worn as equipment. It is also the comparison case for [[Islamophobia]] as an organizing frame — [[Religions and Right-Wing Politics]] uses it — and the reason the [[Alex Jones Sandy Hook Judgments]] and [[Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting]] pages read the way they do: the online ecosystem that produced those events produced this one, and then learned from it.
