# Bucha Massacre
**Status: stub — expand.**
The killing of civilians in Bucha, a commuter town northwest of Kyiv, during the Russian occupation of March 2022. On March 29, 2022, at talks in Istanbul, Russia announced it would "drastically" cut military activity around Kyiv and Chernihiv; when its forces pulled out, AFP journalists entering Bucha on **April 2** found bodies of civilians lying in the streets, some with their hands bound. Evidence of summary executions, torture and sexual violence followed from Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel.
Bucha ended the spring 2022 Istanbul negotiating track in practice, and became the first mass atrocity of the full-scale war to be documented at scale by journalists, Ukrainian prosecutors and international investigators. Russia called the images staged.
