# 2018 Camp Fire
The **Camp Fire** ignited on **November 8, 2018** from a failed PG&E transmission line and destroyed the town of **Paradise, California**, killing **85 people** — the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century until [[2023 Maui Wildfires]]. PG&E later pleaded guilty to **84 counts of involuntary manslaughter** and entered bankruptcy. The fire matters to this knowledge base as the origin point of two Trump-era disaster-politics patterns: presidential **blame-and-threaten** treatment of blue-state disasters, and — via a then-unknown Georgia Facebook poster — the **"Jewish space lasers"** conspiracy.
## The original space-laser post
Days after the fire, **[[Marjorie Taylor Greene]]** — two years before her election to Congress — posted speculation that the fire was started by **"a laser beam or light beam coming down to Earth,"** implicating PG&E, **"Rothschild Inc,"** the solar-space firm Solaren, and Gov. Jerry Brown (full text at [[Marjorie Taylor Greene - laser beam from space]]). Unearthed by [[Media Matters for America]] in January 2021, the post was compressed into the shorthand **"Jewish space lasers"** — the Rothschild reference slotting the fire into centuries-old [[Antisemitism]] and the [[Global Cabal]] frame. The arc from this post to Greene's 2024 "they can control the weather" claims during [[Hurricane Helene]] to her 2025 weather-modification felony bill is the single clearest **conspiracy-to-Congress pipeline** in the vault: the same person, the same disaster-as-secret-weapon template, escalating from Facebook musing to proposed federal criminal law inside seven years.
## Raking and the aid threat
[[Donald Trump]]'s response built the blue-state playbook later executed in full against the [[2025 Los Angeles Wildfires]]: he blamed California's "gross mismanagement of the forests" (most of the burned land was federally managed), suggested the solution was to **"rake"** forest floors as he claimed Finland did (Finland's president disputed the conversation), threatened to **withhold federal payments**, and in January 2019 tweeted that he had ordered [[FEMA]] to send "no more money" to California fires "unless they get their act together." Standing in the ashes of Paradise, he referred to the town as "Pleasure." The episode established that federal wildfire aid to California was, in Trump's framing, conditional and revocable — rhetoric in 2018–19, operational doctrine by 2025.
