# 1816 Presidential Election
[[James Monroe]] (Democratic-Republican), Madison's Secretary of State and the third Virginia Dynasty president in succession, defeated Federalist Rufus King 183–34 in the [[Electoral College]]. This was the **last presidential election in which the Federalist Party fielded a national candidate** — the party would not nominate a presidential ticket in 1820 or thereafter, effectively ending the First Party System.
## Result
- **[[James Monroe]]** (Democratic-Republican) — 183 electoral votes
- **Rufus King** (Federalist) — 34 electoral votes
- Total: 217 electoral votes
## Right-wing relevance
The 1816 election marks the operational death of the original Federalist Party. The collapse is the first major American case study in **party-system reorganization** (later cases: the 1854 Whig collapse, the 1968–1972 Democratic realignment, the 2016 GOP transformation). Each subsequent collapse has been studied as a precedent in political-science literature; the Federalist collapse is the original. Substantively, the Federalist political-economic project (Hamilton's federal credit, national bank, professional civil service, industrial promotion) gets selectively reabsorbed by the Whigs in the 1830s and later by the Republicans after 1854.
