# Palantir-USA Today Audience Data Partnership
On **August 6, 2026**, on its Q2 earnings call, **USA TODAY CO.** — the former [[Gannett]], America's largest newspaper chain, owner of 200+ U.S. local papers plus the UK's Newsquest — disclosed a partnership with [[Palantir]] to "collect, connect and activate audience data to drive more effective and faster monetization." No dollar value has been disclosed by either party.
> [!note] Naming
> The company renamed itself **USA TODAY CO.** from Gannett; this page uses the shorter form for bare-wikilink safety. The corporate record is at [[Gannett]]; the paper is at [[USA Today]].
## The deal
CEO Mike Reed's pitch to investors was the [[Alex Karp]] enterprise-AI thesis applied to journalism: *"Every visit, every session, and every moment of attention creates a signal. When we connect those signals, they become actionable intelligence."* Palantir's software is meant to convert anonymous reader traffic into "known, orchestrated first-party relationships" across advertising, commerce, and subscriptions.
The business logic is the collapse of search referrals. USA TODAY CO. reported **158 million** average monthly unique visitors in Q2, down from **180 million** in Q1, with president Kristin Roberts attributing the decline to "lower referrals from traditional search." Reed insisted the data stays the company's own, and separately floated cutting Google off from scraping if licensing talks fail.
Employees learned of the deal from an email roughly **twenty minutes** before the earnings call.
## The newsroom revolt
**August 10–11.** More than **800 workers across 31 NewsGuild-CWA locals in 18 states** — Detroit Free Press, Arizona Republic, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Indianapolis Star, Columbus Dispatch, Providence Journal, Asbury Park Press and more — published a joint statement demanding the company "immediately end its partnership."
Three grounds, all of which this vault tracks independently:
1. **Surveillance and immigration enforcement** — that Palantir's software "has been used to advance widespread surveillance and power immigration crackdowns" (see [[Palantir ICE Systems]]).
2. **Conflict of interest** — that partnering with "a major player in the news we cover" is structural, not incidental. The statement invoked [[Peter Thiel]]'s remark that freedom and democracy are not compatible, and noted reporters "assaulted and falsely arrested while covering immigration enforcement actions."
3. **No disclosed data handling** — nothing was said about how reader data would be treated.
Asbury Park Press reporter and NewsGuild of New York vice-chair Mike Davis: *"It's pretty surprising that our company would unilaterally decide to bring in such a controversial partner like Palantir without providing a complete explanation to its employees, most of whom are naturally skeptical journalists."* The company's labor-relations VP replied that "our journalism remains fully independent."
**August 19.** The action escalated to a **coordinated lunch-break job action across newsrooms**, photographed at the Columbus Dispatch and echoed by staff at the Asbury Park Press and The Record, under the banner **"No Slop in Our Shops."** The demand had broadened from one vendor to the company's entire AI program — the vendor fight becoming a labor fight about AI in journalism generally.
**Also August 19.** Palantir's own press release for its second Sovereignty Bootcamp lists **USA Today among the attending customers** — the company confirming the relationship in its marketing on the same day its counterparty's newsrooms walked out over it.
## Significance
This is a **commercial-diversification** beat with a media-integrity problem attached, and the two are the same fact seen from opposite ends.
It is **not** Palantir's first media customer — the company already sells to Axel Springer (Politico, Business Insider, Bild, The Telegraph) and [[Fox News]]. What is new is **scale in American local news**: this puts an [[ICE]] contractor's analytics inside 200+ hometown papers whose reporters cover ICE, which is a different proposition from selling to two ideologically-aligned national publishers.
It is also a **new customer category for the counter-campaign**. Every target previously logged under [[Purge Palantir]] was an institution that *buys* Palantir with public money — the NHS, ICE, state pension funds, a denomination's portfolio. Here a private news chain is having reader behavior analyzed by Palantir, and the objectors are the employees whose bylines carry the trust being monetized. The campaign's targeting theory (civilian anchor customers are the exposed flank) holds, but the pressure point is labor rather than a board vote.
The sharpest reading is the inversion against Karp's own rhetoric. Through July and August 2026 he argued that the frontier labs seek to "capture the means of production of their purported partners" — a dynamic he said had "Marxist overtones and undertones." His company is doing precisely that to the customer-relationship layer of the news business: the publisher hands over the reader graph because search collapse has left it no leverage, and what it gets back is a dependency on the analytics vendor.
## Watch
- Whether any NewsGuild local wins **contract language** on AI or vendor selection — the only outcome that would make this durable rather than symbolic.
- Whether a **second publisher** signs a comparable audience-data deal. One newspaper chain is a customer; two is a product line, and it changes what the counter-campaign is fighting.
- Whether the "No Slop in Our Shops" framing spreads to other NewsGuild employers, decoupling from Palantir entirely.
- Whether any dollar value is ever disclosed. Its absence is itself notable for a deal announced on an earnings call as a monetization strategy.
