# Okinawa Prefecture > [!note] Stub > This is a short entry that hasn't been fully written yet. Japan's southernmost prefecture, capital Naha. It hosts most of the U.S. military's bases in [[Japan]], and for more than a decade its politics have turned on one question: whether a U.S. Marine air base should move to another site on the island or leave Okinawa altogether. On **September 13, 2026**, voters replaced two-term governor **Denny Tamaki**, who opposed the relocation, with **Genta Koja**, 42, a former deputy mayor of Naha backed by Prime Minister [[Sanae Takaichi]]'s Liberal Democratic Party. Koja won 423,124 votes to Tamaki's 276,060 and accepts the national government's relocation plan. He is the first governor in 12 years to back it. In October 2026 the prefecture's Military Base Affairs Division appeared in U.S. foreign-agent filings as a client of [[Mercury Public Affairs]], under a contract Tamaki signed before the election.
