# North Korea **North Korea** (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, DPRK) is a hereditary one-party dictatorship ruled by the Kim family since 1948 and, since 2006, a nuclear-armed state. It matters to the KB in three ways: as the test case for leader-to-leader summitry in both Trump terms, as the clearest example of a sanctions regime collapsing once one great-power enforcer defects, and as [[Russia]]'s co-belligerent in the [[Russo-Ukrainian War]]. Its operations aimed at the United States are on [[North Korean Influence]]; the ruler is on [[Kim Jong-un]]. ## Regime structure Power runs through one family across three generations — [[Kim Il-sung]] (1948–1994), [[Kim Jong-il]] (1994–2011) and [[Kim Jong-un]] (2011–present) — and through the Workers' Party of Korea, the army and the security services, all subordinated to the leader. The official ideology is Juche ("self-reliance"), overlaid with a personality cult that the KB files under [[Personalist Regime]]. The country was founded in the Soviet occupation zone after 1945 and fought the [[Korean War]] (1950–53), which ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. In January 2024 Kim abandoned the founding goal of reunification and redefined [[South Korea]] as a separate, hostile state. The Ninth Party Congress (19–25 February 2026) re-elected him general secretary, called the South the "most hostile enemy," declared the DPRK's nuclear status "irreversible and permanent," and kept a door open to Washington. ## Nuclear program North Korea announced its withdrawal from the [[Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty]] in 2003 and has conducted six nuclear tests: October 2006, May 2009, February 2013, January 2016, September 2016 and September 2017. It has not tested a device since 2017. Warhead estimates depend on whether one counts finished weapons or fissile material: | Estimate | Source | |---|---| | About 60 assembled warheads, with fissile material for roughly 90 in total | SIPRI Yearbook, June 2026 (figures as of January 2026) | | "57 — very powerful — nuclear weapons" | Donald Trump, August 2026 | | 80–120 weapons | South Korean defense minister, citing a domestic research institute, August 2026 | | About 130 weapons' worth of material | Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (theoretical maximum) | ## Sanctions UN Security Council sanctions began after the 2006 test and tightened through 2017. U.S. law layered on top, most notably Title III of [[CAATSA]] (2017), which expanded secondary sanctions on North Korean shipping, labor exports and financial access. In March 2024 Russia vetoed the renewal of the UN Panel of Experts that monitored compliance, ending independent UN reporting on sanctions evasion. ## The Russia alliance In June 2024 [[Vladimir Putin]] and Kim signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership treaty that includes a mutual-assistance clause. North Korea then supplied artillery shells, ballistic missiles and troops for Russia's war. Troop and casualty figures vary by source: South Korea's intelligence service (NIS) told lawmakers in February 2026 that about 11,000 North Korean soldiers were in Russia's Kursk region and that roughly 6,000 had been killed or wounded; AP, citing South Korean intelligence in April 2026, put the total deployment at about 15,000 with about 2,000 killed. In April 2026 Pyongyang opened a memorial museum to its war dead, attended by Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and Defense Minister Andrei Belousov; Moscow said it was ready to sign a 2027–2031 military cooperation plan. [[Xi Jinping]] made his first visit to Pyongyang in seven years in June 2026. ## Diplomacy with Trump [[Donald Trump]] met Kim three times in his first term — Singapore (June 2018), Hanoi (February 2019) and the DMZ (June 2019) — without a disarmament agreement. In August 2026 Trump ordered joint exercises with South Korea scaled back and said he would meet Kim "later this year." Kim's sister Kim Yo-jong replied that relations with Trump were "still excellent" but denied that the two leaders were in contact, and said the reduced drills changed nothing. No date or venue for a meeting had been announced as of 6 October 2026. ## See Also - [[Kim Jong-un]] · [[Kim Il-sung]] · [[Kim Jong-il]] - [[North Korean Influence]] · [[South Korea]] · [[South Korean Influence]] - [[Russia]] · [[China]] · [[Russo-Ukrainian War]] - [[CAATSA]] · [[Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty]] · [[Korean War]] - [[Personalist Regime]] · [[Dictators in World History Hub]] · [[Countries Hub]]
