# Israel > [!info] Gateway page > Orientation on Israel is here. Operations directed at the United States are at [[Israeli Influence]]; the full historical cluster is at [[Israeli History Hub]]. **Israel** is the foreign country most deeply embedded in American domestic politics, and the one where the usual left-right mapping breaks down most completely. **The coalition supporting it is not ideologically unified.** It contains secular strategic-alliance arguments, Jewish-American communal ties, and — numerically the largest component — [[Christian Zionism]], an evangelical theological commitment that supports the Israeli state for reasons the Israeli state does not share and that many Israelis find uncomfortable. Treating these as one bloc misses that they want different things and respond to different pressures. The vault keeps them separate because the coalition's behavior is only predictable once you know which component is being addressed. **The alignment has been reorganizing.** For most of the postwar period Israel enjoyed bipartisan American support. What has changed is not simply that the left has moved, but that the right's support has become more unconditional while the Democratic coalition's has become contested — with the result that Israel is now a wedge used domestically by both parties against the other's internal divisions. [[Gaza War]] accelerated this sharply. **A newer and less-noticed development runs the other direction.** Elements of the American right that are strongly pro-Israel also traffic in antisemitic material, and the two are not in tension for them because the support is strategic or eschatological rather than an affinity for Jewish people. That combination is one of the harder things in this vault to describe accurately without either flattening it or sensationalizing it. **[[Israeli Influence]] covers lobbying and the funding relationship**, including [[AIPAC]]'s electoral spending, which is unusual among foreign-policy lobbies in its willingness to spend heavily in primaries. Note the asymmetry with other influence pages: Israeli lobbying is conducted overwhelmingly in the open by American citizens and organizations, which makes it legally distinct from covert foreign operations and rhetorically easy to conflate with them. The standing caution, and it governs everything on this page: criticism of Israeli state policy and antisemitism are distinguishable, the distinction is regularly abused in both directions, and the vault documents specific claims and specific conduct rather than adjudicating the category. ## Where to go from here | Destination | What's there | |---|---| | [[Israeli Influence]] | Lobbying, funding and the alliance relationship | | [[Israeli History Hub]] | The historical arc | | [[Christian Zionism]] | The largest component of American support, and its theology | | [[AIPAC]] | The principal lobbying organization | | [[Gaza War]] | The conflict reshaping the American coalition | | [[Benjamin Netanyahu]] | The figure | ## See also [[Christian Zionism]] · [[Gaza War]] · [[Iran War 2026]] · [[World History Hub]]
