# Great Reset A real [[World Economic Forum]] initiative launched on June 3, 2020, and the global conspiracy theory that ate it — the frame that replaced [[Agenda 21]] as the anti-globalist right's master narrative, gave the imagined world government a living human face in [[Klaus Schwab]], and within two and a half years had generated more than 260,000 Facebook posts and 245 million TikTok views. It is also the case that most rewards precision, because almost every popular account of it is wrong in one direction or the other. The WEF really did publish the sentence the theory is built on. The theory really is, in documented substance, antisemitic. And the initiative's own set-piece event — the Davos meeting themed "The Great Reset" — **never happened.** ## What the WEF actually launched **June 3, 2020.** Two documents, same day. A press release announcing that the January 2021 Davos meeting would be themed "The Great Reset," with Schwab, then-Prince Charles, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva quoted in support. And Schwab's own essay, "Now is the time for a 'great reset'," published simultaneously at the WEF and Project Syndicate, setting out three components: 1. **"Steer the market toward fairer outcomes"** — government coordination, trade and competition rules, and explicitly: wealth taxes, withdrawal of fossil-fuel subsidies, intellectual-property reform. 2. **Direct recovery investment at "shared goals, such as equality and sustainability"** — resilient rather than restored systems, green urban infrastructure, better **ESG** metrics. 3. **"Harness the innovations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to support the public good."** **The sentence that did the damage**, from the same essay: > "The pandemic represents a rare but narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world to create a healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous future." Plus, a few paragraphs later: *"We must build entirely new foundations for our economic and social systems."* Every "they admitted it" clip in circulation traces to those two lines. They are real, unedited, and published under Schwab's name by the organization he founded. **The July 2020 book** *COVID-19: The Great Reset*, by Schwab and Thierry Malleret, elaborated the argument across macro, micro and individual "resets." ## The meeting that never happened Worth stating plainly, because the movement's central set-piece is a phantom: | Date | What happened | |---|---| | Jun 3, 2020 | Announced: January 2021, Davos, theme "The Great Reset" | | Oct 7, 2020 | Moved to Lucerne-Bürgenstock, May 2021 | | Dec 7, 2020 | Moved to Singapore, May 2021 — **and "The Great Reset" quietly dropped from the theme** | | Jan 2021 | A virtual "Davos Agenda" ran instead | | May 17, 2021 | The Singapore meeting **cancelled outright** | The branding was being walked back within six months of launch, at the exact moment the American conspiracy wave peaked. No WEF Annual Meeting has carried a "reset" theme since: "History at a Turning Point" (2022), "Cooperation in a Fragmented World" (2023), "Rebuilding Trust" (2024), "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age" (2025), "A Spirit of Dialogue" (2026). The sequel book was titled *The Great Narrative*, not a Reset follow-up. *Precision note: the WEF never formally renounced the phrase, and no internal decision to drop it has surfaced. The retirement is documented by absence, not by announcement.* ## The theory That the WEF engineered or exploited COVID-19 to impose global authoritarian government: abolish private property, mandate vaccination, install digital IDs, central bank digital currencies and social-credit scoring, depopulate the planet, and advance transhumanism. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue notes the purported endpoint is **inconsistent across tellings** — economic collapse, Marxist authoritarianism, or corporate surveillance dystopia — which is the signature of an umbrella narrative rather than a fixed claim. ISD's structural diagnosis is the important one: the initiative **"lacked specific implementation details, creating space for conspiratorial reinterpretation."** That is the same vagueness a mainstream academic review identified independently — see *What the critics got right* below. The conspiracy theory and the scholarly critique are reading the same defect. The first conspiratorial artifact appeared **June 7, 2020** — four days after launch. A "New World Order power grab" video, 100,000-plus views. ### The 2020 amplification, dated All from the Anti-Defamation League's December 29, 2020 report, which remains live: | Date (2020) | Figure | What was said | |---|---|---| | **Oct 30** | **Rick Wiles**, TruNews | "And if you're talking freemasonry, you're talking about the Zionists … It's all one group" | | Nov 13 | [[Laura Ingraham]], Fox | "powerful people … to use this pandemic as a way to try and force radical social and economic change" | | Nov 16 | [[Tucker Carlson]], Fox | "This is our chance to impose unprecedented social controls on the population" | | Nov 16 | [[Steve Bannon]], *War Room* | "globalization on steroids … a combination of state capitalism and authoritarian rule" | | Nov 19 | Ben Shapiro | "an attempt by members of the political left to grab control of things they do not own" — notably *rejecting* elite orchestration | | Dec 2, Dec 18 | [[Alex Jones]] | "Klaus Schwab, the head of the Davos group, this globalist spokesman"; an "end game" of human extinction | | Dec 6 | Adam Green, Know More News | "set up a Zionist, Noahide, One World Government according to the prophecies" | | Dec 16 | [[Glenn Beck]] | "the plan cooked up by the World Economic Forum … and it will use the threat of COVID" | **Note the order.** The explicitly antisemitic broadcast came **first**, two weeks before Fox News. That sequencing matters for any claim that the antisemitism was a later contamination of an otherwise ordinary sovereignty argument — it was present at the start. Earlier still: Justin Haskins of the Heartland Institute in *The Hill*, June 25, 2020. On November 16 the phrase drew roughly 80,000 tweets in a day. ### The antisemitism Better documented here than anywhere else in this conspiracy family, and the page should not soften it. - **The slogan was relaunched as an antisemitic formulation.** WEF managing director Adrian Monck traced the viral revival of "you'll own nothing and be happy" to a 4chan post reading **"Own nothing, be happy — The Jew World Order 2030."** The theory's most quoted line entered mass circulation in that form. - **Echo notation.** ISD documented white-supremacist communities writing **"(((Klaus Schwab)))"** and **"(((WEF)))"**, and circulating false claims that Schwab descends from the Rothschilds. He is not Jewish. - **Soros and Rothschild substitution.** Documented by ADL across social platforms from 2020. - **"Globalist" as dog whistle.** ADL's 2023 analysis calls it "an antisemitic dog whistle" and "codeword for Jews" in extremist contexts — while carefully adding, of the specific shareholder proposals it was examining, that "there is no evidence to suggest … these proposals were filed with antisemitic intentions," though such conspiracies serve as **"on ramps."** That two-sided formulation is more defensible than a flat equivalence and is the one this page adopts. - **Academic framing.** Robinson and Watson (*Review of International Studies*, March 2026) identify three mechanisms — **externalisation** (domestic problems attributed to foreign actors), **personification** (structures reduced to individuals), **Othering** — and find Jews the consistently Othered target in anti-globalist conspiracism, across a corpus of 4,410 4chan posts, 564 Rebel News items and 10 InfoWars articles from the [[Freedom Convoy]] period. *The structural parallel to the* Protocols of the Elders of Zion *— secret cabal, engineered crisis, world government, financial control — is real and obvious, but no source found maps Great Reset discourse onto the* Protocols *specifically. Treat that as inference, not documented genealogy.* ## Where it went politically — and it was not America first This is the finding that most upends the usual telling. **The Great Reset was mainstreamed abroad before it was mainstreamed in the United States.** - **Australia legislated on it first.** [[Pauline Hanson]] shared a Sky News segment on October 19, 2020, issued a statement on November 10 ("This so-called reset is absolute rubbish"), and on **November 11, 2020** moved a Senate motion for Australia to boycott all WEF events. **Defeated 2–37** — only Hanson and Malcolm Roberts in favour. That vote is **three days before** Ingraham's broadcast: the first national-legislature vote on the Great Reset anywhere. - **Brazil attacked it from a UN podium.** Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, at the UN Special Session on COVID-19 on December 3, 2020: "Totalitarian social control is not the remedy for any crisis." He tweeted "No to the 'Great Reset'" the next day. - **Canada went deepest.** Trudeau's September 2020 remark that the pandemic "has provided an opportunity for a reset" went viral by mid-November. [[Maxime Bernier]] claimed on November 17 to be "the only Canadian politician … speaking against the Great Reset"; Erin O'Toole called it "a massive and risky experiment"; Pierre Poilievre circulated a "Stop the Reset" petition and, in May 2023, pledged his ministers would be barred from the WEF. The [[Freedom Convoy]] then carried the frame internationally, casting Trudeau as Schwab's puppet. - **The Netherlands is the best quantitative case.** ISD measured Dutch-language Facebook posts rising from 1.5 a day in June 2020 to 28 a day by January 2021, with Thierry Baudet's January 26, 2021 "crowbar" post the single highest-performing item. - **Italy produced violence.** In October 2021 the neo-fascist Forza Nuova attacked hospitals in Rome during anti-vaccination protests, explicitly motivated by Great Reset beliefs. **In the United States it mostly took other forms.** - **[[Marjorie Taylor Greene]]** is the clearest adopter of the vocabulary. - **Legislation:** the **Defund Davos Act** — H.R. 8748, Rep. Scott Perry, August 26, 2022; reintroduced as H.R. 7047 on January 19, 2024 with Tiffany, Gosar, Harshbarger, Ogles and Rosendale. Both died. Rep. Tiffany's framing: US tax dollars should not fund the WEF "and their reset on our way of life." *No 119th Congress reintroduction found.* - **The SEC filing vector**, which is underappreciated: in the 2023 proxy season the National Center for Public Policy Research filed at least seven shareholder proposals — at Alphabet, Pfizer, Bank of America, Boeing, Marriott, Merck and Johnson & Johnson — objecting that the companies work with an organization that "openly advocates for transhumanism, abolishing private property, eating bugs, social credit systems, 'The Great Reset'." Three reached proxy ballots. The conspiracy theory entered federal securities filings. See [[ESG-DEI Conspiracy]]. **Two negative findings worth stating as findings:** - **[[Ron DeSantis]]** attacks the WEF and "Davos elites" by name and legislated against ESG in 2023 — but no instance of him using the phrase "Great Reset" was found. He is the *institutionalized-without-the-vocabulary* case. - **[[Donald Trump]]** appears never to have used the phrase. He addressed Davos remotely in January 2025 and **in person on January 21, 2026.** The sitting president whose administration governs on several of the theory's premises has not adopted its language — and flew to the alleged seat of the world government to deliver the keynote. ## Lineage: what it inherited and what it absorbed ``` 1992 Agenda 21 (Rio) ──────────────────────────────┐ 2016 Auken essay ("I own nothing…") ───────────────┤ 2018 WEF video: "You'll own nothing. And you'll be happy." 2019 "I will not eat the bugs" (4chan, Aug 30) ────┤ 2020 THE GREAT RESET (WEF, Jun 3) ════════════════╪══ the umbrella 2021 Climate lockdowns ───────────────────────────┤ 2022 Dutch farmer protests · Freedom Convoy ──────┤ 2023 15-minute cities · ESG · shareholder proposals┤ 2025 CBDC prohibition · SDG rejection ────────────┘ ``` **It supplied what [[Agenda 21]] lacked: a date, a named author, and a quotable text.** Agenda 21 was a 1992 UN document nobody signed. The Great Reset was a June 2020 essay by a man with a face. That is the whole upgrade — and it is why the newer frame absorbed the older claim set. *Though only partially: the [[John Birch Society]] still runs an anti-Agenda-2030 campaign under the old branding. The older institution kept the older brand.* **"You'll own nothing and be happy" is not what people think.** Danish MP Ida Auken published a speculative first-person essay on the WEF site in November 2016 — "Welcome to 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better" — with a note that it was *not* her utopia but a discussion prompt. In April 2018 the WEF built a social video, "8 predictions for the world in 2030," carrying the frame "You'll own nothing. And you'll be happy." It drew 766,000 views. Then the pandemic and 4chan relaunched it. **The WEF then deleted the material**, at Auken's request, because of the abuse and threats she was receiving. Which means the movement's central proof text now survives mainly in archives and the movement's own re-uploads — **and the deletion is itself read as confirmation.** The honest reading: the WEF did publish and promote the sentiment. It was an op-ed thought experiment, not a policy commitment, and it says nothing about confiscation. The error is category, not fabrication, which is exactly why "they made it up" fails as a rebuttal. **Some things it absorbed rather than spawned.** "I will not eat the bugs" first appeared on 4chan on **August 30, 2019** — nine months before the Great Reset existed — in replies to Greta Thunberg photographs. The Great Reset supplied it with a villain and an institutional address. Same with the Dutch farmer protests of 2022, which began as a real fight over a genuine 50-percent nitrogen-reduction policy implying roughly a 30-percent herd cut, and were then narrated as land confiscation for the Reset by [[Tucker Carlson]], Baudet and Geert Wilders. The [[15-Minute City Conspiracy]] is the one clear descendant, built from an Oxford traffic-filter scheme in October 2022 and fused to the Reset within months. ## What the critics got right The page would be worthless as analysis if it treated every WEF objection as conspiracism. The legitimate critique is substantial, predates the pandemic, and comes from across the spectrum. - **The multistakeholder-governance problem is real and was documented in 2016**, four years before the Great Reset, by Harris Gleckman at the Transnational Institute — a left-internationalist critique of the WEF's *Global Redesign Initiative*, which proposed substituting multi-stakeholder governance for intergovernmental decision-making. Gleckman's findings: corporations hold structurally asymmetric influence; there are **"simply no clear rules for MSGs on accountability, responsibility, dispute settlement"**; participant selection favours those likely to agree with the sponsor; and the model bypasses mandatory intergovernmental process. In September 2019, **200-plus civil-society organizations** denounced the UN–WEF Strategic Partnership Framework on exactly these grounds. - **[[Naomi Klein]]** coined "conspiracy smoothie" for the theory *and* delivered the harder left critique in the same December 2020 piece: the Great Reset is "a coronavirus-themed rebranding of all the things Davos does anyway," whose real function is to create "a plausible impression that the huge winners in this system are on the verge of voluntarily setting greed aside." Her line: *"If Davos wasn't 'seeking a better form of capitalism' to solve the spiraling crises Davos itself systematically deepened, it wouldn't be Davos."* **Klein is the proof that dismissing the conspiracy does not require defending the WEF.** - **The academic verdict on the book is that it is unfalsifiable.** Steven Umbrello, in the *Journal of Value Inquiry* (2021), found a false dilemma, no implementation specifics, tautological reasoning, and buzzwords standing in for content. That is the same hole ISD identified as the conspiracy's raw material. - **And the critique converges across the spectrum.** Michael Rectenwald, writing for the Independent Institute and Hillsdale's *Imprimis* in February 2022 from a Mises-adjacent position, argues stakeholder capitalism is "corporate socialism" that substitutes state-sanctioned monopoly for competition and turns corporations into "governmentalities" wielding state power without accountability. Strip the intent claims and **he and Gleckman identify the same defect from opposite ends of the political spectrum.** That convergence is the fairest thing on this page, and it marks the boundary precisely: **the legitimate critique is about structure; the conspiracy theory is about intent.** The WEF did propose a governance model in which corporations sit as co-equal governors. It did so in public, in its own documents. That is not a misreading. ## Where it stands, September 2026 **The claims won; the phrase faded.** Several demands that circulated for years inside Great Reset discourse are now US policy — **Executive Order 14178** (January 23, 2025) prohibits federal agencies from establishing, issuing or promoting central bank digital currencies and terminates existing work; the US Mission to the UN formally **"rejects and denounces"** Agenda 2030 and the SDGs as "soft global governance" inconsistent with sovereignty (March 7, 2025); anti-ESG law is on the books in Florida and elsewhere. *None of those instruments mentions the WEF or the Great Reset — do not read causation into the sequence.* Meanwhile the frame's own outlets have begun narrating its obsolescence: Zerohedge ran "The End Of 'The Great Reset'." A conspiracy frame whose coalition takes power loses its function. **Meanwhile the WEF's actual condition has come to supply what the theory previously had to invent.** In the ten months from April 2025: - **April 21, 2025** — [[Klaus Schwab]] resigns as Chair amid a whistleblower investigation. Cleared of material wrongdoing on August 15 after a review of 100,000-plus emails, which found roughly 5,000 Swiss francs in wrongly billed private costs over thirteen years. - **August 15, 2025** — interim Chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe steps down, later reported as citing a "toxic work environment." **[[Larry Fink]]** of [[BlackRock]] and André Hoffmann become interim Co-Chairs. - **February 26, 2026** — **President and CEO Børge Brende resigns after 8.5 years amid Epstein-files revelations that he had dined with Epstein.** *The WEF's own statement mentions only "an independent review conducted by outside counsel" finding "no additional concerns beyond what has been previously disclosed"; the Epstein connection comes from press reporting, not the Forum.* Alois Zwinggi becomes Interim President and CEO. As of late September 2026 the WEF has **no permanent chair and no permanent chief executive**, is reportedly considering shrinking its board, and is chaired on an interim basis by the CEO of the world's largest asset manager — a figure more central to [[ESG-DEI Conspiracy]] discourse than Schwab ever was. **Resist the tidy decline narrative, though.** Davos 2026 drew a **record 400 government leaders**, roughly 3,000 participants from 130-plus countries, some 850 CEOs, and the US president in person. The Forum's governance and reputation are in crisis while its convening power is at an all-time high. Both things are true. ## KB significance **1. It is the upgrade that made the old frame portable.** [[Agenda 21]] gave the anti-globalist right a document; the Great Reset gave it an author, a date, a quotable sentence and a face. Everything after 2020 — [[15-Minute City Conspiracy]], climate lockdowns, the bug meme, CBDC panic, the ESG shareholder campaign — hangs on this peg rather than the 1992 one. **2. The antisemitism is load-bearing, not incidental, and the chronology proves it.** The explicitly antisemitic broadcast preceded the Fox News version by two weeks; the slogan entered mass circulation as "The Jew World Order 2030"; the echo notation and the fabricated Rothschild lineage are documented. Any treatment that presents this as a sovereignty argument that later attracted bigots has the sequence backwards. **3. Personification is the transferable lesson.** Scholars name it as the core mechanism: a structural grievance about unaccountable transnational governance gets reduced to one man, because a man can be hated. Schwab left in April 2025 and the slot refilled within four months with [[Larry Fink]]. Watch for the same move wherever a diffuse institutional target acquires a face. **4. Reality caught up, which is the hardest thing to write about honestly.** For five years the theory required invention. Then the WEF lost its founder to a misconduct investigation, his replacement to a toxic-workplace resignation, and its CEO to the Epstein files — and handed interim control to BlackRock. None of that validates a plot to abolish private property. All of it is real, and a KB that tracks how the right uses the WEF has to hold both at once. **5. The structure/intent line is the analytical tool worth keeping.** Gleckman and Rectenwald agree on the defect and disagree about everything else. The critique that survives scrutiny is about accountability architecture; the one that doesn't is about a secret plan. That distinction generalizes well past this page. --- ## See Also - [[Klaus Schwab]] — the man the theory is built around - [[World Economic Forum]] — the institution, and its 2025–26 governance crisis - [[Agenda 21]] — the parent frame it replaced - [[New World Order]] — the root node of the family - [[15-Minute City Conspiracy]] — its clearest descendant - [[ESG-DEI Conspiracy]] — the corporate-governance chapter, and the SEC-filing vector - [[Global Cabal]] — the umbrella narrative it slotted into - [[Bilderberg Group]] — the previous named villain - [[John Birch Society]] — the institution that kept the older branding - [[Freedom Convoy]] — where the frame did its heaviest organizing work - [[Conspiracy Theory Logic]] — the reasoning pattern
