# Fluoride The **anti-fluoride** tradition holds that community water fluoridation is a covert government scheme, whether mass medication, mind control or deliberate poisoning, rather than the dental-health measure it is. It is one of the oldest continuously running anti-government conspiracy theories in American politics. In 2025 it became the first of them to reach federal policy through [[MAHA]]. That makes it the vault's cleanest case of a conspiracy theory turning into government action. ## Pre-history: from Grand Rapids to the Birchers Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first city to fluoridate its water in January 1945. Within a decade fluoridation was mainstream public-health policy, and it later became one of the CDC's "ten great public health achievements" of the 20th century. The backlash came from the right. The [[John Birch Society]] cast fluoridation as a **communist plot** to weaken Americans, which *Dr. Strangelove* (1964) satirized with General Ripper's "precious bodily fluids." That placed fluoride in the same "they're doing something to us" family as [[HAARP]], [[Chemtrails]] and [[MK-Ultra]]. Real government abuses, such as [[Tuskegee and the Ethics of Human Experimentation]], gave the genre plausibility. ## The science pivot (2024) The modern revival swapped communism for neurotoxicity. It rests on a real but narrow scientific question: whether fluoride exposure at levels above U.S. water standards, typically about twice the 0.7 mg/L U.S. target, is associated with lower IQ in children. In September 2024 a federal judge in *Food & Water Watch v. EPA* found an "unreasonable risk" at current exposures and ordered the EPA to respond under the Toxic Substances Control Act. The Biden EPA appealed in January 2025. Mainstream dental and public-health bodies, including the ADA, still hold that fluoridation at U.S. levels is safe and effective. ## MAHA makes it policy (2025–26) - **Nov. 2024.** [[Robert F. Kennedy Jr.]] announced the incoming administration would advise removing fluoride from water. - **March–May 2025: state bans.** Utah became the first state to ban water fluoridation (HB 81, March 2025). Florida followed under [[Ron DeSantis]] (SB 700, May 2025). Other states and dozens of localities have debated or dropped fluoridation since. - **April 7, 2025.** Kennedy said he would tell the CDC to **stop recommending** community fluoridation. EPA Administrator [[Lee Zeldin]] announced an expedited review of the science. *No formal withdrawal of the 2015 federal 0.7 mg/L recommendation has been found.* - **May 13 → Oct. 31, 2025: FDA.** Commissioner [[Marty Makary]] announced action against ingestible fluoride supplements for children, citing gut-microbiome and other concerns. On Oct. 31 the FDA stopped short of removal. It said the products should not be given to children **under 3** or to low- and moderate-risk children, and it added warning labels. The ADA protested that clinical judgment, not a label, should decide, especially in communities that had just lost fluoridated water. - **Feb. 24, 2026: EPA.** The agency published a preliminary assessment plan for a new fluoride toxicity review to inform "potential revisions" of the drinking-water standard. No rulemaking timeline was set. - **Beyond water.** Texas AG [[Ken Paxton]] and other officials opened fronts against other fluoride sources, including toothpaste marketing to children (per ProPublica). ## Why it matters Fluoride is the proof of concept for the MAHA method. It takes a decades-old conspiracy tradition, attaches it to a genuine scientific uncertainty at the edges, and uses both to win policy changes: state bans, federal guidance and product restrictions. None of those needed the underlying fear to be established. The same pipeline runs through the [[Anti-Vax Movement]]. ## See also - [[MAHA]] · [[Robert F.
