# United Front
The **United Front** is the [[Chinese Communist Party]]'s strategy — and the bureaucracy that runs it, the United Front Work Department (UFWD) — for co-opting and mobilizing groups outside the Party to advance its interests and neutralize opposition. [[Mao Zedong]] called the united front one of the Party's three "magic weapons," developed during the [[Chinese Civil War]] to win over non-Communist allies. Under [[Xi Jinping]] it has been revived and expanded as a central instrument of both domestic control and overseas influence.
Abroad, united-front work targets diaspora Chinese communities, business and academic elites, friendship associations, and local politicians — cultivating sympathetic voices, discouraging criticism of Beijing, and gathering information. This is the activity the American right means when it warns of CCP "infiltration," and it is the analytical core of the vault's [[China]] foreign-influence file, alongside espionage and tech transfer. Tracking it is part of the brief of the [[House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party]].
The united front sits in the [[Chinese History Hub]] as the domestic-and-diaspora complement to the [[Belt and Road Initiative]]: influence projected through persuasion and penetration rather than infrastructure and debt.
