# Suspicion and Righteousness
**Righteousness supplies the license. Suspicion supplies the target.** Neither produces a political movement alone; fused, they produce the thing [[Jerrold Post]] called the psychopolitics of hatred.
This page is a synthesis, not a received framework — it joins Post's **suspicion** (the foundational element of [[Political Paranoia]]: *things are not what they seem*) to [[Jonathan Haidt]]'s **righteousness** (moral intuition arrives first, reasoning follows as its press secretary; morality binds and blinds). The two operate in different registers and were built for different purposes, which is exactly why they interlock rather than duplicate.
## The two operators
| | Suspicion (Post) | Righteousness (Haidt) |
|---|---|---|
| Register | Epistemic — how reality is read | Moral — how judgment is felt |
| Core premise | Surface appearances conceal deliberate design | Intuition first, justification second |
| What it produces | A hermeneutic: everything must be decoded | A conviction: we are the good ones |
| Origin | Psychiatry, psychoanalysis, intelligence tradecraft | Evolutionary and cultural moral psychology |
| Distribution | **Variable** across persons, cultures, moments | **Universal** — species-wide design feature |
| Alone it yields | Crankery — anxious, private, politically inert | Smugness — certain, complacent, unmobilized |
The asymmetry in that last-but-one row is the whole argument. *Everyone is righteous.* Not everyone is suspicious. What distinguishes a moral community from a mass movement is whether suspicion has been installed on top of the righteousness — and installation is usually somebody's deliberate work.
## The structural rhyme
Both describe **closed loops in which the conclusion precedes and then recruits the reasoning.**
- Challenge a moral intuition and you do not get revision; you get a better rationalization. Haidt's press-secretary model, and the reason fact-checking underperforms. See [[Dual-Process Theory]], [[Motivated Reasoning]].
- Challenge a suspicion and the disconfirming evidence is absorbed as further proof of the cover-up. Post's seventh element — belief sustained *in the presence of* contradiction. See [[Epistemic Learned Helplessness]].
Same architecture, two domains. This is why co-occurrence is so stable: each one's failure mode is the other one's confirmation. Compare [[Confirmation Bias]] and [[Tribal Epistemology]].
## The coupling point is Sanctity
Of Haidt's six foundations, the one that most reliably recruits suspicion is **Sanctity/Degradation** — a contamination detector. The logic runs:
1. The Sanctity intuition fires: something sacred is being degraded.
2. But the degradation is not visible.
3. Therefore it must be **concealed** — which requires a theory of concealment.
4. Suspicion is that theory. It supplies the hidden defiler the moral intuition already demanded.
This is why purity-coded politics generates conspiracy content at such a rate: the intuition postulates a violation, so a violator must be produced. [[Groomer Discourse]], [[Pizzagate]], [[Blood Libel]], "poisoning the blood" ([[Great Replacement Theory]]), fluoride, seed oils, adrenochrome. The content varies; the derivation does not.
Loyalty/Betrayal does comparable work with a different output — it generates the *traitor within* rather than the *defiler without*. See [[Enemy of the People]], [[McCarthyism]], [[Deep State]].
## Projection is the mechanical hinge
This is where the two frameworks genuinely touch rather than merely rhyme.
- Haidt: **morality binds and blinds** — a group cannot perceive its own moral violations, because the binding foundations suppress exactly that perception.
- Post: **projection** is element six — internal states relocated onto hidden external motives.
Projection is what happens at the seam. The group's own aggressive impulses, which *must* be disowned because the group is righteous, get relocated onto the enemy. Righteousness makes the disowning necessary; suspicion makes the relocation credible; [[Splitting]] enforces the good/evil partition that keeps both stable.
The consequence is a **ratchet**: because the group's aggression is experienced as the enemy's, the group's own escalation registers to it as self-defense. Escalation therefore intensifies rather than exhausts itself. See [[Projection (Psychological)]], [[Dehumanization]], [[Moral Disengagement]].
## Stenner is the bridge
[[Karen Stenner]]'s formula — authoritarian predisposition **×** perceived [[Normative Threat]] — is the missing middle term, and both thinkers slot into it:
- **Haidt supplies the content of the predisposition.** Which moral intuitions are standing by: Loyalty, Authority, Sanctity.
- **Post supplies the manufacture of the threat signal.** Suspicion is the perception engine that converts ambient uncertainty into a specific, intentional, concealed threat.
Restated: **righteousness is the steady state; suspicion is the activation.** That extends the [[Daniel Kahneman]] → Haidt → Stenner sequence already documented on the [[Jonathan Haidt]] page by naming what actually pulls the trigger.
## Where the two frameworks conflict
They are not fully compatible, and the incompatibility is worth preserving rather than smoothing over.
Post's vocabulary is **clinical** — paranoia, delusion, pathology — and it descends from a psychiatric and intelligence-analytic tradition that treats these as continua with a disordered end. Haidt spends much of his work arguing the opposite: that reading conservative moral cognition as disorder is precisely the liberal error, and that the binding foundations are functioning normally, not malfunctioning.
Three ways to hold the tension:
1. **Post's own escape hatch.** His unit of analysis is the *shared dynamic*, not the individual. A leader-follower lock is a social fact, not a diagnosis, and this is the reading that survives Haidt's objection intact.
2. **Divide the labor by register.** Haidt is right that the moral layer is normal function. Post is right that the epistemic layer admits of degrees, and that "things are not what they seem" can be cultivated to a degree no one would call ordinary.
3. **Put the causal weight on the ecosystem, not the population.** If righteousness is universal and suspicion is installed, then the interesting variable is the installer. This is the reading the KB should prefer — it moves the analysis from voter psychology to [[Disinformation]], [[Propaganda]] and [[Flooding the Zone]].
The failure mode to avoid: using the coupling as a way to call half the country paranoid. That is not an analysis, and it reproduces the exact blindness Haidt is describing.
## KB applications
**The persuasion diagnostic.** Counter-messaging fails when it addresses only one operator. Evidence aimed at suspicion ("here is the audit") does nothing to righteousness. Moral appeals aimed at righteousness ("this is cruel") are decoded by suspicion as the cover story. Anything that moves people has to interrupt both — which usually means a trusted in-group messenger, because that is the only channel suspicion does not filter.
**Reading a piece of content.** For any right-wing media artifact, ask two questions: *which moral foundation is it firing?* and *what concealment is it asserting?* A segment that does only the first is ordinary politics. A segment that does both is recruitment. See [[Enchanted America]], [[Framing]].
**Predicting escalation.** The projection ratchet predicts that pressure on the group intensifies rather than reduces commitment, and that direct attacks on the leader strengthen the follower bond. Documented repeatedly across [[Stop the Steal]] and [[QAnon]].
**Durkheim underneath both.** [[Émile Durkheim]] is the shared ancestor Haidt names explicitly — morality as social glue, [[Collective Effervescence]] as its ritual production. Suspicion is what gives the ritual an antagonist. A congregation with an enemy is a movement.
