# Scottish Enlightenment
The eighteenth-century flowering of philosophy, economics and history in Edinburgh and Glasgow — [[David Hume]], [[Adam Smith]], Adam Ferguson, Francis Hutcheson, Thomas Reid — that produced the theory of commercial society, the sentimentalist account of morals, and the idea that institutions are "the result of human action, but not the execution of any human design." It is the lineage [[Friedrich Hayek]] claimed for [[Spontaneous Order]] and the source the American right cites when it wants an Enlightenment that is not French.
