# Population Estimates Program
The [[Census Bureau]] program that carries a decennial count forward through the decade that follows it. Each 1 July estimate is produced by the cohort-component method — the estimates base plus births, minus deaths, plus or minus migration — which means the program adds change to a level rather than re-measuring the level. Every annual release, called a *vintage*, replaces the whole prior series back to the base, so figures from different vintages are not comparable to each other.
Its output is the population figure most federal formulas actually run on, and it is also the denominator the [[Bureau of Economic Analysis]] divides by to produce per capita personal income. See [[Census Formula Funding Flow]].
Post-2020 estimates ran on a "blended base" assembled from 2020 Census totals, the 2020 Demographic Analysis and the Vintage 2020 estimates, because census results were not available at the demographic detail the base required. Vintage 2025, released 25 June 2026, was the first to carry the 2020 Census's full age, sex, race and Hispanic-origin detail into the 1 April 2020 base. The corrected series for a completed decade — the intercensal estimates — is produced only after the next census; the revised 2010–2020 figures were released on 7 November 2024.
