# Out-Group Bias
**The model:** The systematic distortions applied to *them*: out-groups are perceived as more homogeneous than in-groups ("they're all alike" — the out-group homogeneity effect), less richly human in inner life (infrahumanization), and interpretable by their worst members. Tajfel's minimal-group experiments (1971) showed the machinery activates on arbitrary labels — coin-flip group assignment suffices to trigger favoritism and derogation.
## The Mechanism
Group boundaries repurpose ordinary cognition: limited contact supplies few exemplars of *them* (hence homogeneity), self-esteem runs partly through group esteem (hence derogation as self-repair), and attribution warps by membership — their misdeeds are character, ours are circumstance (the ultimate attribution error). None of this requires hatred as input; hatred is the *output* when entrepreneurs organize the raw bias. The homogeneity illusion is the load-bearing part: it converts any member's act into evidence about all.
## KB Applications
### The synecdoche engine of nativist politics
"Immigrant crime" coverage runs on out-group homogeneity: one offender stands for millions in a way no in-group member ever does (no one reads a white perpetrator as data about white people). The vault's [[Great Replacement Theory]] and immigration-timeline files show the bias industrialized — curated anecdote streams doing statistical work they cannot honestly do. Selection Bias in the feed plus homogeneity in the head is the complete machine.
### De-pluralization as bias farming
Geographic and informational sorting (see Schelling Segregation Model, [[Filter Bubble]]) starves people of out-group exemplars, deepening homogeneity illusions — which polarization entrepreneurs then harvest. Contact theory's countermeasure (structured equal-status contact) names what the sorting destroys.
