# Numerology
The belief that numbers carry hidden meanings and that decoding numerical patterns reveals truths about people, events, and the cosmos. Western numerology is often traced — loosely, and with much retrospective mythmaking — to [[Pythagoras]] and the Pythagorean assignment of qualities to numbers, though the historical Pythagoreans' "number philosophy" is itself largely a later construction (see the Burkert caveat on the [[Pythagoras]] page). Related practices include **[[Gematria]]**, the assignment of numerical values to letters so that words can be "summed" and compared.
For the KB, numerology is the degraded descendant of the genuine Pythagorean insight that some of reality is mathematically structured. Where the math of music ([[Music of the Spheres]]) is demonstrable, numerology generalizes the *feeling* of hidden order into a method for finding patterns anywhere — a confirmation-bias engine that supplies the "everything is connected, and I can decode it" epistemics of conspiracy culture, including [[QAnon]]'s number/date "decodes." It overlaps with [[Sacred Geometry]] and [[Esotericism]] as part of the number-mysticism cluster.
## The demarcation, and the pipeline
The line between numerology and mathematics is not the presence of numbers but the direction of inference. Mathematics derives consequences from structure and tests them; numerology begins with a conclusion and searches the numbers for a path to it, and since any sufficiently large set of digits contains any pattern one wants, the search always succeeds. That is [[Apophenia]] with an arithmetic interface — the same faculty that finds faces in clouds finds "17" in a timestamp. [[Gematria]] supplied the method to the Kabbalists and to Protestant decoders of the Beast's 666 (Nero, the Pope, Napoleon, each in turn); the online "decode" — the anonymous Q's drops read for numerical correspondences — is the same practice with the same tradition of never being falsified.
The pipeline the vault tracks runs from alt-spirituality into the political right: the wellness and New Age audiences whose habits of hidden-order thinking made them, in 2020, the fastest-growing recruits to [[QAnon]] (the "pastel Q" phenomenon), and whose vocabulary — energy, alignment, awakening — the movement adopted. Numerology is the smallest and oldest of those habits. See the [[Conspiracy Theories Hub]] for the larger structure and [[Esotericism]] for the tradition it came from.
