# Heuristics
**The model:** Mental shortcuts that produce fast decisions with acceptable accuracy in many contexts, at the cost of systematic errors in others. The Kahneman-Tversky heuristics-and-biases program documented many specific heuristics (availability, representativeness, anchoring) and the systematic errors they produce. [[Gerd Gigerenzer]]'s ecological-rationality program emphasized that the same heuristics often work *well* in their native environments and only produce errors when applied outside them.
The mental-model importance is recognizing that *heuristic processing is the default*. Deliberative analysis is the exception, requiring cognitive effort that humans expend sparingly. Most decisions, including most political and economic ones, are heuristic. Understanding which heuristics are operating and how they shape outcomes is one of the most useful analytical disciplines.
## Key Heuristics
**Availability:** Judging probability by how easily examples come to mind. Produces overestimation of dramatic risks (terrorism, plane crashes) and underestimation of dispersed ones (climate, heart disease).
**Representativeness:** Judging probability by similarity to typical examples. Produces stereotyping errors, conjunction fallacy, base-rate neglect.
**Anchoring:** Judging quantities by adjustment from a starting reference point. Produces susceptibility to first numbers presented and to irrelevant anchors.
**Affect:** Judging outcomes by emotional response. Produces good/bad sorting that drives many political and consumer decisions.
## KB Applications
### Political Decision-Making Is Heuristic
Most voter decision-making is heuristic, not deliberative. Voters use partisan identification (a representativeness heuristic), media sources they trust (an authority heuristic), affect toward candidates (an affect heuristic), and similar shortcuts rather than detailed policy comparison. This is rational in the [[Bounded Rationality]] sense — full deliberation isn't feasible — but it makes voter behavior systematically exploitable by movements that can shape the heuristic inputs.
### Why Right-Wing Information Engineering Works
The contemporary right-wing media ecosystem has been optimized for heuristic exploitation. Affect-heavy framing, identity-marker signaling, partisan-trust cues, vivid availability examples — all are engineered to produce heuristic responses that bypass deliberative engagement. The audience isn't deliberating poorly; they're processing heuristically while the media environment shapes the heuristic inputs.
The defensive response is structural: change the heuristic environment, not the audience. Better defaults, more trusted sources, less affect-loaded framings would produce better heuristic outputs even with the same audience. This is the policy implication of [[Bounded Rationality]] political design.
