# God of the Gaps
"God of the gaps" names a recurring argumentative move: wherever current science cannot yet explain a phenomenon, a divine or designed cause is inserted as the default explanation. It is a form of the argument from ignorance ("we can't explain X, therefore agent Y"), and its weakness is structural — as science advances, the gaps close and the explanatory placeholder retreats. The KB invokes it to diagnose [[Intelligent Design]] arguments such as [[Irreducible Complexity]] and origin-of-life creationism (see The Origin of Life), which depend on particular gaps remaining permanently unexplained. The long history of gaps closing — chronicled for life chemistry in The History of Biochemistry — is the standing empirical rebuttal.
