# Federal Register **Status: stub — expand.** The **Federal Register** is the official daily publication of the U.S. government — the gazette of record in which federal agencies publish proposed rules, final rules, notices, and presidential documents (executive orders and proclamations). Published each business day by the Office of the Federal Register (part of the National Archives), it is the legal vehicle that makes agency action public: under the [[Administrative Procedure Act]], a proposed rule does not formally begin its comment period until the **Notice of Proposed Rulemaking** appears here, and a final rule generally cannot take effect until it is published. Once a year, its permanent rules are codified into the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). ## See also - [[Administrative Procedure Act]] · [[APA Notice-and-Comment Rulemaking]] - [[Administrative State]] · [[Policy Hub]]
