# Crypto-Anarchism
**Crypto-anarchism** is the doctrine, set out in Timothy May's "The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto" (circulated 1988), that cryptography will make some kinds of state power technically unenforceable. The argument is mechanical, not moral. If strangers can transact and communicate without revealing who or where they are, then taxation, regulation, censorship and prohibition lose their grip at the margin. The state's reach shrinks to whatever it can physically police.
It shares a goal with electoral [[Libertarianism]] and [[Anarcho-Capitalism]] but differs in method. Libertarianism works through politics and anarcho-capitalism through property theory. Crypto-anarchism works through **deployment**: each new tool becomes an accomplished fact that legislation arrives too late to reverse.
## From manifesto to movement
- **1988–1992.** May's manifesto sketches "BlackNet," an anonymous marketplace for information. The [[Cypherpunks]] mailing list (1992, May, Eric Hughes and John Gilmore) makes "cypherpunks write code" the creed. The list's alumni and ideas run through [[WikiLeaks]] ([[Julian Assange]]) and, above all, [[Bitcoin]]. [[Satoshi Nakamoto]] announced the Bitcoin white paper on a cryptography list in 2008.
- **The dark side of the thesis.** The same literature floated "assassination markets" and unregulated drug markets. **Silk Road** (2011–13) was the first large-scale field test ([[Silk Road Darknet Market Timeline]]). The FBI found and convicted its operator, [[Ross Ulbricht]], and that remains the standing rebuttal to the strong form of the thesis.
## Absorbed into the right (2024–26)
After 2020 the doctrine was absorbed into mainstream crypto politics, and in the second Trump term that meant into the Republican coalition. Some of it was vindicated and some of it was prosecuted:
- **The pardon.** Trump promised the 2024 Libertarian convention he would free Ulbricht, and he pardoned him on **Jan. 21, 2025**. Ulbricht now speaks on the crypto and Republican circuit.
- **The delisting.** Treasury removed [[Tornado Cash]] from the sanctions list on **Mar. 21, 2025**, after the Fifth Circuit ruled that immutable smart contracts are not "property" that can be sanctioned.
- **But the prosecutions continued.** Tornado Cash co-founder [[Roman Storm]] was convicted in August 2025 on the unlicensed-money-transmitting count, and the jury hung on laundering and sanctions. His retrial has been **pushed to April 2027**, and his acquittal motion is still pending. The founders of the Samourai Wallet mixer pleaded guilty and were sentenced in November 2025 to **five and four years**.
The pattern is a movement that won the politics and lost the doctrine. Crypto's owners got a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, friendly regulators and a pardon. The builders of the actual anonymity tools, the people crypto-anarchism is about, are still being prosecuted by the same Justice Department. What the right absorbed was crypto-*capitalism*: the asset class, not the anarchy. See [[Crypto-Political Ecosystem]].
