# Content Moderation **Content moderation** is the set of rules, human reviewers and automated systems by which platforms decide what stays up, what comes down, what is labeled and what is demoted. It is the practical form of nearly every fight the vault files under [[Censorship]] and [[Big Tech]]: the right's claim of viewpoint discrimination ("shadowbanning," the 2020 Hunter Biden laptop suppression, the January 2021 deplatforming of Trump), the left's claim of under-enforcement against harassment and [[Disinformation]], and the legal shield of [[Section 230]] that lets platforms do either. Since 2023 the argument has moved from human trust-and-safety teams — largely dismantled at X after [[Elon Musk]]'s purchase and cut back across the industry — to the models that now do the work, which is where it meets [[AI Ethics]] and [[Algorithmic Bias]]. > [!note] Stub > Created to resolve a link from the AI Ethics page. Missouri* (2024), the EU Digital Services Act as the right's foreign-censorship grievance, Meta's January 2025 end of fact-checking. ## See Also - [[Censorship]] · [[Section 230]] · [[Big Tech]] · [[Disinformation]] · [[Algorithmic Bias]] · [[AI Ethics]] · [[Elon Musk]]
