# China Lobby
The **China Lobby** was the informal coalition of politicians, publishers, missionaries, Chinese Nationalist diplomats and activists that backed [[Chiang Kai-shek]]'s Republic of China in American politics from the 1940s into the 1970s. Its spokesmen included Congressman Walter Judd, and its institutional arm was the Committee of One Million, organized by Marvin Liebman, which opposed seating the People's Republic at the UN. It turned the 1949 Communist victory into the domestic charge of a "loss of China," which fed [[McCarthyism]]. It failed to stop [[Richard Nixon]]'s opening to Beijing and U.S. recognition of the PRC in 1979. Its remnants did help pass the Taiwan Relations Act that same year.
