# Vulcan Elements
**Vulcan Elements** is a North Carolina rare-earth magnet startup that became the centerpiece of the first government contract directly tied to White House intervention on behalf of a company in the Trump family's investment portfolio. In November 2025 the Pentagon's [[Office of Strategic Capital]] (OSC) announced a **$620 million direct loan** to Vulcan — the largest loan the office had ever made — roughly three months after [[Donald Trump Jr.]]'s venture firm [[1789 Capital]] took an undisclosed stake in the company. ProPublica later reported the deal was **initiated by White House senior counselor [[Peter Navarro]]**, a close friend of Trump Jr.'s, and pushed through in weeks.
## Company Profile
Vulcan was launched in **2023** by a Harvard Business School student. It produces **sintered neodymium magnets** — the permanent magnets needed for drones, satellites, missiles, and other military hardware — at a primary manufacturing and R&D facility in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park. As of early 2025 the company had raised less than $10 million and had fewer than 50 employees; its first manufacturing facility opened in March 2025. It had been winning relatively small defense contracts since the Biden administration.
After the OSC deal, Vulcan announced a **$918.1 million facility in Benson, North Carolina** (10,000 metric tons of annual magnet capacity, ~1,000 projected jobs), backed by the $620M OSC loan, ~$50M in federal incentives, and private capital. Vulcan and its refining partner [[ReElement Technologies]] jointly framed a **$1.4 billion partnership** with the U.S. government to build a vertically integrated domestic magnet supply chain.
## The 1789 Capital Stake (August 2025)
In **August 2025**, Vulcan announced a **$65 million** funding round that included an investment from **[[1789 Capital]]**, the venture firm [[Donald Trump Jr.]] joined as a partner after his father's second election. Neither firm has disclosed the size of the stake. After the OSC deal was announced, estimates of Vulcan's valuation jumped roughly **tenfold — from ~$200 million to ~$2 billion** — a windfall for its investors, Trump Jr.'s firm among them. See [[1789 Capital Stake in Vulcan Elements]].
## The $620M Pentagon Loan (November 2025)
The marquee deal: a $620M OSC direct loan plus an ~$80M conditional loan to [[ReElement Technologies]] (~$700M joint commitment), $50M in Commerce Department incentives, and a $50M government equity stake in Vulcan with the right to buy more. See [[Vulcan Elements OSC $620M Pentagon Loan]] for the full record and the corruption analysis.
## The Corruption Question
Vulcan, the Pentagon, and Trump Jr. all denied that the president's son or political connections played any role. ProPublica's reporting (Robert Faturechi, May 28 2026) contradicted the framing: of dozens of companies under OSC review, Vulcan's was the **only** deal initiated by a top White House aide, and staff were told "the call came from the White House: we have to get this done." This is the first time the award of a federal contract has been directly linked to White House intervention benefiting a Trump-family investment — distinguishing it from the broader pattern of Trump-linked companies winning contracts (see [[Defense Tech Conflicts of Interest]] and the [[Trump Family Corruption Ecosystem]]). The genuine national-security case for domestic [[Critical Minerals]] production is precisely what made the deal hard to challenge.
The deal triggered a [[Warren-Crow Letter on Vulcan Loan]] from congressional Democrats and a blocked House effort to subpoena Trump Jr.
