# Valar Atomics **Valar Atomics** is a nuclear-energy startup, founded and run by CEO **Isaiah Taylor**, that builds small helium-cooled reactors aimed at powering AI data centers and other heavy industrial loads. Its own funding announcement describes the mission as "scaling nuclear energy for heavy industrial power and clean hydrocarbon fuel production." In June 2026 it became the **first company to operate a DOE-authorized reactor outside the national-laboratory system**. The name comes from Tolkien, like [[Erebor]]'s, a convention shared across the Thiel-adjacent startup network. ## The reactor Valar's flagship, **Ward 250**, is a modular high-temperature gas reactor: TRISO fuel particles, graphite moderation, helium coolant, an initial test power of 100 kilowatts thermal, and a design scalable to 5 megawatts electric. The company plans to make its own TRISO fuel at a co-located plant using German technology. | Date | Milestone | |---|---| | Aug 2025 | Named to the DOE **Reactor Pilot Program**, set up under Executive Order 14301 to get at least three advanced reactors critical by July 4, 2026 | | Nov 17, 2025 | **NOVA** core, configured to model Ward 250, reaches zero-power criticality at Los Alamos's criticality lab at the Nevada National Security Site, under NNSA oversight. A $130M Series A had just closed. | | Feb 2026 | Ward 250 flown to Utah in "Operation Windlord," billed as the first military airlift of a nuclear reactor | | Apr 23, 2026 | Final DOE safety-basis approval | | Jun 18, 2026 | **Ward 250 goes critical** at the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab in Emery County, the second reactor to do so under the pilot program (after Antares Nuclear's Mark-0 at Idaho National Laboratory on June 4) | The DOE pilot path is the point. Ward 250 operates under Department of Energy authorization, not a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license. That lets a startup reach criticality in months, but it does not license commercial power sales; that still requires the NRC. ## Why it's in this KB Valar sits where two threads this vault tracks separately meet: - **The AI power crunch.** It is one of the nuclear entrants pitched as an answer to the data-center load growth documented in [[The Quest for 90 Gigawatts]]: dedicated or behind-the-meter generation that bypasses the grid interconnection queue. See [[Data Centers]]. - **The defense-tech money layer.** On **August 4, 2026** Valar announced a **$200M credit facility** with [[Erebor]] as administrative agent, alongside J.P. Morgan ([[JPMorgan Chase]]), Crescent Cove and Hercules Capital. It was the first large disclosed loan from the Luckey–Lonsdale bank, which had only $77.8M of loans on its books at June 30. The same day Valar announced a **$1B Series B led by [[Sequoia Capital]]**, with Apandion, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures and [[Valor Equity Partners]]. Valor is also reported as an expected investor in Erebor's own 2026 round, so the same fund sits on both sides of the loan: in the borrower and in the lender. The facility's rate, maturity and collateral have not been disclosed; Goodwin represented Valar and Morgan Lewis advised Crescent Cove. No data-center power-purchase agreement has been announced. ## Related - [[Erebor]] · [[Palmer Luckey]] · [[Joe Lonsdale]] · [[Peter Thiel]] - [[The Quest for 90 Gigawatts]] · [[Data Centers]] · [[Department of Energy]] · [[Oklo]] - [[Sequoia Capital]] · [[Valor Equity Partners]] · [[Palmer Luckey News Log]]
