# TigerSwan TigerSwan is a private security and "global stability" firm founded in 2008 by James Reese, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and former Delta Force operator. Hired by Energy Transfer to handle the [[Standing Rock]] protests, it ran military-style surveillance and infiltration of the Water Protectors -- the documented "private security" pillar of [[The Octopus]] frame's Big-Oil strand. ## Standing Rock operations Leaked internal documents (published by The Intercept, 2017-2020) showed TigerSwan describing the movement as "an ideologically driven insurgency with a strong religious component" and likening Water Protectors to jihadist fighters, while coordinating with police across multiple states and embedding infiltrators who posed as activists. In 2017 North Dakota's licensing board sued TigerSwan for operating without a license; the dispute settled in 2019 with a $175,000 payment and an agreement not to operate in the state. ## The Blackwater question [[The Octopus]] essay calls TigerSwan "a spinoff of [[Erik Prince]]'s [[Blackwater]]." That overstates the corporate relationship. What is established: founder James Reese had been a vice president at Blackwater; he advised the firm; and Blackwater financed TigerSwan's first North Carolina training facility. TigerSwan is therefore best described as an ex-Blackwater-executive-founded firm with deep personnel and financing ties to Blackwater -- not a formal subsidiary or spinoff. ## Epistemic status The leaked documents, the licensing suit, and the Reese/Blackwater personnel and financing ties are documented. The literal "Blackwater spinoff" framing is an overstatement and is flagged as Troy's wording, not established corporate fact. ## See also - [[The Octopus]] - [[Standing Rock]] - [[Blackwater]] - [[Erik Prince]]
