# The Boring Company **The Boring Company** is [[Elon Musk]]'s tunneling company, founded in 2016 and run by president [[Steve Davis]]. It promised to fix urban traffic with cheap, fast tunnels. In practice it has become a small Las Vegas transit operator, and the employer of the Musk lieutenant who led [[DOGE Ecosystem]] operations in 2025. ## The promise and the record The company announced tunnels for Chicago (an O'Hare express), Los Angeles, and a Baltimore–Washington route. None was built. Its one working system is the **Vegas Loop**: about **2.2 miles of tunnel and nine stations** as of 2026. The newest stations are the Fontainebleau (February 2026) and the Sahara (August 2026). Human drivers carry passengers in Tesla Model Ys at about 35 mph. The approved plan calls for about 68 miles and more than 100 stations. The business model shifts cost onto others: the company pays for tunnels, the resorts pay for their own stations, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority pays about $4.5 million a year toward operations. ## The regulatory pattern The Vegas record shows how Musk companies get treated by local regulators: - **Drilling fluid.** In October 2025 the Clark County Water Reclamation District fined the company **$500,000** for discharging apparent drilling fluid into the sewer system, starting that April. - **Firefighter burns.** After two firefighters suffered chemical burns in a May 2025 training exercise, Nevada OSHA issued three "willful" serious citations carrying about **$425,000** in fines. The state withdrew them in November 2025. In **February 2026**, federal OSHA found that complaints about Nevada OSHA's handling were "substantiated," including that case documentation had been modified or removed. It still found the withdrawal itself justified, because the citations did not meet the legal test for a willful violation. - The episode reached the legislature, where members cited nearly 800 environmental and worker-safety violations across the Loop build. Assemblymember Howard Watts said breaking the law had become "a cost of doing business for companies in Musk's orbit." ## Why it matters here - **The DOGE bridge.** Davis ran day-to-day DOGE operations for Musk in 2025 and brought the Boring Company's cost-cutting style into federal agencies. See [[Steve Davis]]. - **The holdings map.** Boring is one of the privately held nodes in [[Elon Musk Holdings]], backed by the same investor circle, including [[Luke Nosek]]'s [[Gigafund]], that funds SpaceX. - **The enforcement gap.** The OSHA episode is a small, fully documented case of the pattern the vault tracks at federal scale: a regulator backing off a Musk company under pressure. ## See also - [[Elon Musk]] · [[Elon Musk Holdings]] · [[Elon Musk Inner Circle]] · [[Elon Musk Timeline]] - [[Steve Davis]] · [[DOGE Ecosystem]] · [[Gigafund]] · [[Luke Nosek]]
