# Tesla Optimus
[[Elon Musk]]'s humanoid robot program — the most ambitious (and most Musk-inflated) attempt to mass-produce general-purpose humanoid robots. Musk has described Optimus as potentially **more valuable than the rest of Tesla combined** and has set production targets of **10 million units per year by 2027**. The program is KB-relevant because it sits at the intersection of Musk's economic power, TESCREAL ideology, labor replacement, and the militarization question that follows every dual-use robotics platform.
## Production Timeline (Musk Claims vs. Reality)
| Date | Musk Claim | Reality |
|------|-----------|---------|
| **2022** | Optimus prototype unveiled at AI Day | Walking demo with visible stability issues |
| **2024** | "Production next year" | Limited prototypes in Tesla factories |
| **2025** | 5,000 units for internal factory use | Hundreds delivered (well below target) |
| **Q1 2026** | Optimus Gen 3 prototype unveiling | Delayed for redesign |
| **Q2 2026** | Fremont factory conversion: **end Model S and Model X production** to free assembly lines for Optimus | Announced; in progress |
| **2026** | 50,000–100,000 units | Announced target |
| **2027** | Production line capacity: **10 million Optimus/year** | Announced target |
The pattern is classic Musk: announced timelines consistently slip by 2–5x, but the direction of travel is real. Tesla is actually ending Model S/X production to make room for Optimus — that's a material commitment, not just a tweet.
## KB Significance
### 1. The Musk Conglomerate Expansion
Optimus extends the [[Elon Musk]] empire into a new domain:
```
SpaceX (rockets/defense) + xAI (frontier AI) + Neuralink (brain-computer)
+ Tesla (energy/transport) + X (media) + DOGE (government)
+ Optimus (humanoid robots/labor replacement)
```
If Optimus reaches even 1% of Musk's production claims, Tesla becomes one of the largest robotics companies on Earth — adding physical-world AI deployment to Musk's existing control of rocket launch (SpaceX), AI models (xAI), social media (X), and government access (DOGE).
### 2. The TESCREAL Implementation
Musk has explicitly framed Optimus in TESCREAL terms: robots will do all physical labor, enabling a **post-labor economy** where humans are freed from work. This is the Singularitarian thesis made physical — and it raises the same questions the KB documents about who benefits from automation (capital owners) vs. who is displaced (workers).
### 3. The Military Inevitability
Tesla has not announced military applications for Optimus. But every general-purpose humanoid robot platform faces the same pressure documented across this KB: military demand for robots that can operate in human-built environments is enormous and growing (see [[Foundation Future Industries]], Pentagon humanoid contracts). The question is not whether Optimus will be offered for military use, but when.
### 4. Labor vs. Capital
Musk's stated vision — millions of humanoid robots replacing human labor — is the most extreme version of the AI-driven labor displacement thesis. At 10 million units/year (Musk's target), Optimus would represent a direct substitute for millions of manufacturing, warehouse, and service workers. The political implications — a billionaire who controls both the robots and the government access (DOGE) — connect Optimus to every thread in the KB about oligarchic power concentration.
