# News Corporation [[Rupert Murdoch]]'s holding company — in two incarnations. The original **News Corporation** (1979–2013) was the vehicle that took a single inherited Adelaide paper to Fleet Street (*The Sun*, *The Times*, the *News of the World*), New York (the [[New York Post]], 1976), Hollywood (20th Century Fox, 1985), American cable ([[Fox News]], 1996; see [[Fox News Founding Investment]]) and finally the [[Wall Street Journal]] ([[News Corp - Wall Street Journal Acquisition]], 2007). Murdoch became a U.S. citizen in 1985 because federal law barred foreign ownership of broadcast licenses; the Fox network followed the next year. ## 2011–2013: the scandal and the split In July 2011 it emerged that the *News of the World* had hacked the voicemail of a murdered schoolgirl, Milly Dowler, among thousands of targets. Murdoch closed the 168-year-old paper within a week, executives were arrested, Parliament called him to testify, the Leveson Inquiry into press ethics followed, and the company's bid for the rest of BSkyB collapsed. The [[Elite Impunity]] page uses it as the rare case where a media owner met a limit. Under shareholder pressure the company split on **June 28, 2013**: the new **News Corp** took publishing — Dow Jones and the [[Wall Street Journal]], the *Post*, the British and Australian papers, HarperCollins, and the real-estate listings businesses (REA Group, Realtor.com) that now produce much of its profit — while film and television went to [[21st Century Fox]]. Most of 21st Century Fox was sold to Disney in 2019 ([[Disney - 21st Century Fox Deal]]); what remained became [[Fox Corporation]]. ## Now News Corp is run by Robert Thomson, a former *Times* and *WSJ* editor, and controlled through the Murdoch Family Trust's Class B shares. Its political weight is the *Journal*'s editorial page and the *Post*, and — after the [[Murdoch Trust Settlement]] — it is [[Lachlan Murdoch]]'s to direct: the September 2025 settlement bought out James, Elisabeth and Prudence and left Lachlan in control of both Fox Corporation and News Corp, ending the possibility that a post-Rupert trust would moderate either. [[James Murdoch]]'s share of the proceeds went into [[Lupa Systems]], which now owns the center-left counter-pole. The [[Murdoch Family]] page has the dynasty; the [[News Corp Timeline]] has the chronology. The relationship between the *Journal* and the administration — the Epstein birthday-letter story of July 2025 and the $10 billion suit it produced — is on the [[Wall Street Journal]] page, and shows that ownership by the family that owns Fox News is not the same thing as editorial alignment. ## See Also - [[Rupert Murdoch]] · [[Lachlan Murdoch]] · [[James Murdoch]] · [[Murdoch Family]] · [[Murdoch Trust Settlement]] - [[Wall Street Journal]] · [[Dow Jones]] · [[New York Post]] · [[Fox News]] · [[Fox Corporation]] · [[21st Century Fox]] - [[News Corp - Wall Street Journal Acquisition]] · [[Fox News Founding Investment]] · [[Disney - 21st Century Fox Deal]] · [[Telecommunications Act of 1996]] - [[News Corp Timeline]] · [[Fox News Timeline]] · [[Elite Impunity]] · [[Lupa Systems]]
