# Neuralink
Neuralink is a neurotechnology company co-founded by [[Elon Musk]] in 2016 that develops implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) devices. The company sits within the broader [[Elon Musk Holdings]] constellation alongside [[Tesla]], [[SpaceX]], and Musk's other ventures including xAI, X (formerly Twitter), and The Boring Company.
## Founding and Leadership
[[Elon Musk]] co-founded Neuralink in 2016 alongside Max Hodak and several other neuroscientists and engineers. Hodak served as president until his departure in 2021. [[Shivon Zilis]] plays a key role in board oversight and operations, while [[Jared Birchall]], who manages Musk's family office, provides financial and organizational oversight across the Musk empire's holdings.
## Technology
Neuralink's core product is the N1 implant, a small device surgically placed in the brain that reads neural signals through ultra-thin electrode threads. The system translates brain activity into digital commands, allowing paralyzed patients to control computers, phones, and other devices through thought alone. By 2026, Musk announced that the company was moving toward high-volume production and a streamlined surgical procedure that is almost entirely automated. A key technical advancement involves threading the device's electrodes through the dura mater without removing it, reducing surgical invasiveness.
## Clinical Trials and FDA Status
Neuralink's regulatory path has reached several milestones:
- **Breakthrough Device Designation**: The FDA granted Breakthrough Device Designation for Neuralink's speech restoration technology, providing an expedited review pathway.
- **De Novo Classification (January 2024)**: The FDA granted De Novo classification to the N1 implant for use in adults with severe paralysis resulting from spinal cord injury or ALS. This conditional clearance authorized an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical trial.
- **First Human Implants**: By mid-2025, at least five people had received Neuralink implants, with roughly 20 participants enrolled in clinical trials overall.
- **Parkinson's Trial (2026)**: A second IDE trial (NCT05892211) launched in Q1 2026, focused on closed-loop stimulation for tremor suppression in Parkinson's disease.
- **Premarket Approval**: Full PMA (Premarket Approval) from the FDA was targeted for the 2025-2026 timeframe.
## Funding and Valuation
As of a 2024 funding round, Neuralink was reportedly valued at approximately $8.5 billion.
## Controversies
### Animal Testing
Neuralink has faced sustained scrutiny over its animal testing practices. The USDA conducted investigations into allegations that rushed testing protocols led to the unnecessary deaths of primates used in experiments. Critics charged that the company prioritized speed over animal welfare in its race to reach human trials.
### Employee Lawsuit: Short v. Neuralink
On June 14, 2024, former animal-care lead Lindsay Short sued Neuralink in Alameda County Superior Court. She alleges that rhesus macaques carrying herpes B scratched her twice, in September 2022 and March 2023, while she lacked adequate protective equipment. She also alleges the company resisted reporting her injuries to the USDA ([[Department of Agriculture]]) and [[OSHA]] as required. After complaining about conditions she says she was demoted, and she says she was handed a separation agreement the day after telling HR she was pregnant in June 2023. The 15 counts include pregnancy discrimination, failure to accommodate, retaliation and wage violations, and she seeks about $10 million. Neuralink did not respond to press inquiries at the time. No ruling or settlement had been reported as of September 2026. The suit gives a worker-safety angle to the animal-testing scrutiny above: the same lab conditions critics raised about the animals, described from the side of the people handling them. See [[Musk Companies Labor Litigation]].
### Connections to DOGE
Neuralink intersects with the [[Second Trump Administration]]'s governance apparatus through personnel overlap. [[Edward Coristine]], who became a [[DOGE]] operative, was previously a Neuralink intern, illustrating the revolving door between the Musk corporate empire and the federal efficiency initiative.
## Political Significance
Neuralink is relevant to the broader themes tracked in this knowledge base for several reasons. As a node in the Musk empire, it benefits from and contributes to [[Elon Musk]]'s political influence and his relationships with the [[Second Trump Administration]]. The company's rapid FDA progress raises questions about whether [[Deregulation]] efforts and Musk's political access have influenced the regulatory environment. As a [[Big Tech]] and [[Silicon Valley]] enterprise pushing the boundaries of human-machine integration, Neuralink also sits at the frontier of emerging technology policy debates.
