# NFDG
AI-focused venture capital fund founded by [[Nat Friedman]] (former [[GitHub]] CEO) and [[Daniel Gross]] (former [[Y Combinator]] partner) in 2023, raising $1.1 billion in their debut fund at the dawn of the generative AI boom. NFDG invested between $1M and $100M per deal across AI infrastructure, applications, and products, building a portfolio that included [[Perplexity]], Character.ai, and their own co-founded venture [[Safe Superintelligence]] (with [[Ilya Sutskever]]).
NFDG achieved a reported 4x return in just two years before being partially acquired by [[Meta]] in one of Silicon Valley's most unusual acqui-hire arrangements — [[Meta]] absorbed a substantial portion of NFDG's holdings (potentially over $1 billion) while hiring Friedman and Gross to run [[Meta Superintelligence Labs]]. The fund also built its own supercomputer (the Andromeda Cluster, 3,200 H100 GPUs) — a level of infrastructure investment unusual for a venture fund and indicative of how the AI race blurred the line between investing in AI companies and building AI capabilities directly.
