# Lupa Systems [[James Murdoch]]'s private holding company, founded in 2019 after he left 21st Century Fox on the Disney sale and broke publicly with his father and brother over [[Fox News]]. Based in New York and Mumbai, it invested for its first six years as a minority partner — media, entertainment, climate technology, Indian and Southeast Asian companies — and was better known for what its founder said (he resigned from the [[News Corporation]] board in 2020 over "disagreements over certain editorial content") than for what it owned. That changed in 2025–26. The [[Murdoch Trust Settlement]] in September 2025 bought James, Elisabeth and Prudence out of the family trust — James's share is reported at about **$1.1 billion** — and ended his claim on the empire. On **May 20, 2026** Lupa agreed to buy [[New York Magazine]] (with The Cut, Vulture, Intelligencer, The Strategist, Curbed and Grub Street), Vox.com and the [[Vox Media]] podcast network for more than **$300 million** in cash ([[James Murdoch Lupa NY Mag Vox Acquisition]]) — its first controlling stake in a mature media property and the first time a Murdoch has bought a center-left newsroom. Vox Media kept The Verge, Polygon, Eater and SB Nation. ## Why it is tracked The vault maps the right-wing media ecosystem; Lupa is the inverse, tracked for three reasons the deal page spells out. The Murdoch dynasty is now on both sides — [[Lachlan Murdoch]] with [[Fox Corporation]] and News Corp, James with New York and Vox — so the family cannot be read as one bloc ([[Murdoch Family]]). Second, capital: counter-pole media is usually nonprofit or undercapitalized, and Lupa has the depth of a right-wing holding company. Third, the [[Resistance Organizations Hub]] needs a category for well-funded centrist and center-left media formations, and Lupa is its anchor entry. James Murdoch's other affiliations — a long tenure on Tesla's board, donations to Democratic candidates — put him at the edge of the [[Thiel Network]]'s map rather than inside it. ## See Also - [[James Murdoch]] · [[Lachlan Murdoch]] · [[Murdoch Family]] · [[Murdoch Trust Settlement]] · [[News Corporation]] - [[James Murdoch Lupa NY Mag Vox Acquisition]] · [[Vox Media]] · [[New York Magazine]] - [[Resistance Hub]] · [[Resistance Organizations Hub]] · [[Founding and Funding Map]]
