# Leidos
**Leidos** is the largest federal information-technology and services contractor in the United States — $17.2B in FY2025 revenue, $17.5B in net bookings, about 48,000 employees, and *Washington Technology*'s No. 1 government-technology contractor for five straight years — under CEO Tom Bell (since 2023). It was created in 2013 when Science Applications International Corporation, the Cold War intelligence contractor founded in 1969, split in two; the larger half took the new name and the classified work. It is in this vault because it is the quiet half of the defense industry: not the missile-maker but the company that runs the networks, analyzes the intelligence, staffs the agencies and processes the data, which is why the [[Intelligence Personnel Recycling]], [[Intelligence Budgets and the Black Budget]] and [[Intelligence Community and Dark Money]] pages all reach for it.
## What it does
Leidos's book is spread across defense, intelligence, civil and health: hypersonics and counter-drone systems ([[DOD Hypersonic Missile Production Agreement]] with [[Anduril]], the [[DHS $1.5B Counter-UAS IDIQ Award]]), the NASA and FAA IT backbones, the Veterans Affairs and Social Security health-records systems, airport security screening hardware, and the classified analytic and network contracts that make it one of the intelligence community's largest private employers. FY2025 awards included positions on the $151B SHIELD vehicle and the $24.5B Advanced Technology Support Program V; Bell's stated growth pillars are space and maritime, energy infrastructure, cyber, mission software and managed health.
## Why the vault cares
Leidos is the [[Defense Primes Sector]]'s services pole and the reference for what the [[Traditional Defense Contractors]] page calls the incumbents that the [[Anduril Watch Log]] tracks the challengers against — and, increasingly, partner with. Its SAIC lineage puts it at the center of the [[US Intelligence History Hub]]'s account of how the intelligence community came to be staffed by contractors after 9/11; the [[History of Computing]] page records its origins. Alongside [[CACI International]], [[Booz Allen Hamilton]] and [[Parsons Corporation]] it is the layer of the national-security state that does not appear in the Deals folder's headline numbers because its contracts are large, long and boring — which is the point.
