# Guardian Industries A major global glass and building-products manufacturer and a wholly owned subsidiary of [[Koch Industries]] — one of the world's largest makers of float glass, fabricated glass, and automotive glass. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Guardian operates manufacturing across dozens of countries and supplies the construction, interior-design, and automotive industries worldwide. ## From Windshields to a Global Float-Glass Giant Guardian was founded in 1932 as the Guardian Glass Company, a small Michigan windshield fabricator. Its transformation came under **William "Bill" Davidson**, who took control in 1957 (he and relatives bought the company from his uncle), steered it through bankruptcy and reorganization, and in 1970 opened a state-of-the-art **float-glass plant in Carleton, Michigan** — making Guardian the first U.S. company in over 50 years to enter the primary-glass market. Under Davidson the company grew explosively: past $100 million in sales by 1974, $200 million by 1979, and over **$5 billion in revenue** across 150+ countries by the time of his death in March 2009. (Davidson was also famous as the longtime owner of the NBA's Detroit Pistons.) ## The Koch Acquisition Koch had been a minority investor in Guardian for years before completing its full acquisition on **February 1, 2017**, folding the glass giant into the conglomerate and rebranding much of it as **Guardian Glass**. The deal fit Koch's pattern of acquiring large, capital-intensive, materials-and-manufacturing businesses and operating them privately as long-horizon holdings. ## Why It Matters Here Guardian is one of the marquee subsidiaries whose profits feed the [[Koch Industries]] cash engine behind the [[Koch Network]]. It also illustrates the Koch acquisition model: buy established, unglamorous industrial leaders (glass, paper, electronics, chemicals), take them private, and hold them indefinitely — a strategy that builds enormous, disclosure-light cash flow far from the volatility and transparency of public markets.
