# Google Brain
[[Google]]'s deep-learning research division, founded in 2011 by Jeff Dean, Greg Corrado, and Andrew Ng. Brain was the institutional home of much of the research that produced the current AI era — most consequentially the 2017 *Attention Is All You Need* paper that introduced the [[Transformer]] architecture underlying every modern large language model.
It absorbed the Toronto deep-learning group when [[Google]] acquired DNNresearch in 2013, bringing [[Geoffrey Hinton]], [[Ilya Sutskever]], and Alex Krizhevsky in-house. Sutskever worked at Brain from 2013 until leaving to co-found [[OpenAI]] in December 2015.
In April 2023 Brain was merged with DeepMind to form [[Google DeepMind]], consolidating [[Alphabet]]'s AI research under a single organization in response to competitive pressure from [[OpenAI]].
> Status: stub — fill out with the Transformer paper lineage, the researcher diaspora (how many frontier labs were founded by Brain alumni), and the internal politics of the DeepMind merger.
