# SpaceX Contracts Government-contract ledger for [[SpaceX]] — the public money that underwrites the whole Musk empire. Contract/deal records live canonically in `/Deals/`; this is the consolidated index. > SpaceX has received **$38B+** in cumulative government funding (NASA, DoD, NRO). The deeper significance is dependency: officials have said canceling SpaceX contracts could "cripple" the DoD launch program — and during Musk's [[DOGE Ecosystem]] tenure (Jan–May 2025), Pentagon cuts conspicuously did **not** touch SpaceX. See [[Defense Tech Conflicts of Interest]]. ## Major government contracts | Program / contract | Customer | Value | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | [[SpaceX SB-AMTI Award]] | Space Force | **$4.16B** | May 29, 2026; airborne moving-target tracking constellation, fielded by 2028; competitive OTA; [[Golden Dome]] sensing layer | | [[SpaceX SDN Backbone Award]] | Space Force | **$2.29B** | May 26, 2026; proliferated LEO data-transport backbone, prototype end-2027; formerly **MILNET** | | [[SpaceX NSSL Phase 3 Lane 2 Awards]] | Space Force | multi-billion | National-security launch backbone | | [[SpaceX NSSL Phase 3 Lane 1 Awards]] | Space Force | $1.6B task orders under +$11.4B ceiling | July 2026; 18 Falcon 9s, Sensing and Targeting portfolio | | Launch + satellite ops (2025–2029) | Space Force | $5.9B | Awarded April 2025 | | Cargo/crew, Artemis lander, ISS deorbit | NASA | $13B+ since 2015 | | | CCtCap modification — Crew-15 / 16 / 17 | NASA | **$946M** | Sep 18, 2026; firm-fixed-price IDIQ modification, **sole source** (NASA's own wording), following a May notice of intent. Mission readiness 2027–2028, period of performance through 2030. Brings SpaceX to **17** CCtCap missions and the contract total to **$5.92B** | | [[SpaceX Starshield]] | NRO / DoD | classified | Military spy/comms constellation | | Cumulative government funding | NASA + DoD + NRO | $38B+ | Per Washington Post tally | > **The two May 2026 mega-awards, taken together, are sensing plus transport** — $6.45B awarded in four days, both weeks before the June 12 IPO, both under **Other Transaction Authority**. OTAs carry lighter competition requirements, thinner protest rights and less public disclosure than conventional federal contracts. That instrument choice is itself a pattern worth tracking across this ledger. ## Where the sole-source argument holds — and where it does not This ledger's central claim is dependency. The claim is strong, but it is not uniform, and stating it uniformly would be wrong: - **It holds for launch.** No competitor is close to SpaceX's cadence — 100 orbital missions by Aug 18, 2026, roughly three a week. [[Blue Origin]]'s New Glenn and [[United Launch Alliance]]'s Vulcan cannot absorb the tempo; the July 2026 NROL-95 mission closed NSSL Phase 2 with rivals still grounded. - **It holds for data transport.** The [[SpaceX SDN Backbone Award]] descends from MILNET, a program Congress objected to *by name* for having "no competition, no open architecture." Five competitors received **$12M each** to interoperate with a **$2.29B** SpaceX backbone — a ~38:1 ratio that funds rivals as peripherals rather than alternatives. - **It does not hold for SB-AMTI.** That award was competitively made against a real vendor pool, and the Space Force followed it with **$615M to three other firms** in August 2026 ([[Rocket Lab]] taking $397M) specifically to broaden the supplier base. Lopsided is not the same as captive. ## Dependency & conflict-of-interest angle - **Sole-source dependency** — SpaceX is the only viable provider for many national-security launches. - **DOGE exemption** — Musk ran government-cutting DOGE while SpaceX contracts were spared (*The Intercept*). - **Revolving door** — a former SpaceX employee, now a Pentagon official, has worked to expand Space Force programs favorable to SpaceX. ## Commercial / compute deals (in /Deals/) Not government contracts, but material to the conglomerate: - [[Google-SpaceX xAI Compute Deal]] - [[SpaceX-Anthropic Compute Deal]] - [[SpaceX-Cursor Acquisition]] - [[SpaceX $25B Bond Sale]] ## Monitoring sources (for the watch sweep) - **USASpending.gov / SAM.gov / FPDS** — federal obligations. - **NASA + Space Force + NRO** announcements; **Breaking Defense / SpaceNews**. - Watch for **conflict-of-interest reporting** given Musk's political role, and any **recompete/protest** activity from [[Blue Origin]] or [[United Launch Alliance]]. ## Open questions to track - Total federal obligations trend (USASpending recipient profile). - New Space Force / NASA awards and any sole-source justifications. - Whether post-Musk-DOGE scrutiny changes contract oversight. - **Did Congress's $500M Tranche 3 restoration work?** Lawmakers deliberately funded the [[Space Development Agency]]'s competing Transport Layer to prevent single-vendor capture of military data transport. The SDN Backbone award went ahead at $2.29B anyway. Whether a real alternative architecture survives is testable by end-2027. - **The Starshield ">$6B cumulative" figure** — repeatedly reported by secondary aggregators, not yet confirmed against USASpending. Deferred across three sweeps; resolve with a direct check. - **The OTA pattern.** Both 2026 mega-awards used Other Transaction Authority. Track whether this becomes the default instrument for SpaceX work and what it removes in the way of protest rights and disclosure. ## See Also - [[SpaceX]] — company page - [[SpaceX Dossier]] — dossier front door - [[SpaceX Starshield]] - [[SpaceX Watch Log]] - [[SpaceX SB-AMTI Award]] · [[SpaceX SDN Backbone Award]] - [[Space Development Agency]] · [[Golden Dome]] - [[Defense Tech Conflicts of Interest]] - [[Deals Hub]]
