# Anthropic Leadership
Leadership roster and governance architecture for [[Anthropic]], the AI safety company that became a political flashpoint. Anthropic is a [[Public Benefit Corporation]] with a novel governance layer: the Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT), an independent body that gradually gains the power to elect a majority of the board. The structure is designed to prevent the kind of governance crisis that hit [[OpenAI]] in November 2023 — but whether it can survive the pressures of a $965B IPO is an open question.
## Governance phases
### Phase 1: Startup governance (2021–2023)
Standard VC-backed startup. Dario and Daniela Amodei as co-founders with board control. Early investors included [[Jaan Tallinn]], [[Dustin Moskovitz]] via [[Open Philanthropy]], and Google ($300M, 2022).
### Phase 2: PBC conversion and LTBT creation (2023–present)
Anthropic converted to a [[Public Benefit Corporation]] and established the Long-Term Benefit Trust in September 2023. The LTBT holds Class T Common Stock giving trustees the power to elect an increasing share of board directors: initially 1 of 5, eventually a majority. The trust's purpose: ensure Anthropic's AI development serves "the long-term benefit of humanity" even as commercial pressures mount.
## Board of Directors
| Name | Role | Background | Since |
|------|------|-----------|-------|
| [[Dario Amodei]] | CEO, Co-Founder, Director | Former VP Research at [[OpenAI]]; led the 2021 safety exodus | 2021 |
| [[Daniela Amodei]] | President, Co-Founder, Director | Former VP Operations at [[OpenAI]] | 2021 |
| Yasmin Razavi | Director | Managing Director at [[Spark Capital]]; early investor | ~2022 |
| Reed Hastings | Director | Co-founder of Netflix; major philanthropist | ~2024 |
| Chris Liddell | Director | Former CFO of Microsoft, GM, International Paper; former Deputy White House Chief of Staff under Trump (first term) | Feb 2026 |
| Vas Narasimhan | Director (LTBT-appointed) | CEO of Novartis; physician-scientist | Apr 2026 |
**Chris Liddell** is the politically significant appointment. A New Zealand-born corporate operator who served in Trump's first-term White House (2017–2021), Liddell bridges the business establishment and MAGA governance. His appointment in February 2026 — the same month as the Pentagon ban — signals Anthropic's attempt to build credibility with the administration that just blacklisted it.
**Vas Narasimhan** is the first director appointed by the LTBT, demonstrating the trust mechanism actually functions. His Novartis background aligns with Anthropic's push into life sciences after hiring [[John Jumper]].
## Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) Trustees
| Name | Background |
|------|-----------|
| Neil Buddy Shah | Social enterprise; former CEO of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation |
| Richard Fontaine | National security; CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) |
| Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar | Legal/policy; former California Supreme Court Justice; President of the Carnegie Endowment |
The LTBT trustees are "financially disinterested" — they hold no equity and receive no profit participation. Their sole power is electing directors via Class T shares. The trust currently controls 1 of 6 board seats (Narasimhan). The trust's governance power increases over time or upon fundraising milestones, eventually reaching majority board control.
**Amendment safeguard:** the LTBT charter can be amended by trustee consent plus stockholder consent, or by a stockholder supermajority alone (a failsafe). The required supermajority grows larger over time as the technology becomes more powerful — an unusual ratchet mechanism.

## The OpenAI exodus (2021)
Anthropic's founding was itself an act of institutional departure. The core team left [[OpenAI]] in 2021 over disagreements about safety prioritization and commercialization pace:
- **[[Dario Amodei]]** — VP of Research at OpenAI
- **[[Daniela Amodei]]** — VP of Operations at OpenAI
- **Tom Brown** — lead author of the GPT-3 paper
- **Chris Olah** — interpretability researcher
- **Sam McCandlish** — research scientist
- **Jared Kaplan** — research scientist (scaling laws)
- **Jack Clark** — Policy Director
This was the first major talent exodus from OpenAI. The second wave came in 2024 when safety researchers [[Ilya Sutskever]] and Jan Leike departed, and the third in late 2024 when CTO Mira Murati, VP Research Barret Zoph, and Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew all left within weeks.
## Key hires (2025–2026)
| Date | Hire | Significance |
|------|------|-------------|
| Oct 2025 | Rahul Patil (CTO) | First non-founder CTO; infrastructure scaling focus |
| Early 2026 | Former [[RAND Corporation]] head | Defense establishment credibility signal |
| Jun 2026 | [[John Jumper]] (from [[Google DeepMind]]) | Nobel laureate, [[AlphaFold]] co-creator; highest-profile AI research hire of 2026. Signals life sciences push. Paired with [[Noam Shazeer]]'s departure to [[OpenAI]], erased $200B+ from [[Alphabet]] market cap |
