# Massachusetts U.S. Senate 2026
## Snapshot
**Decided September 1: [[Ed Markey]] beat [[Seth Moulton]] 64.9%–35.1%** in the Democratic primary, a margin of just under 30 points. AP called it shortly after 8:30 p.m. The generational challenge that had looked competitive in July — Axios was still calling Markey's lead "narrow" on July 1 — collapsed through August, and the four final polls (Markey +14 to +35) had the direction right. Markey, 80, now faces Republican [[John Deaton]] in a general election no forecaster considers competitive. Moulton gave up his MA-06 seat to run and holds no office after January.
The turnout story is the one worth keeping: roughly **883,000 Democratic ballots**, about 10% above Secretary of the Commonwealth Galvin's projection and ~106,000 above the certified 2022 primary, while Republican turnout (~255,000) came in about 8% under projection. Raw totals (572,595–310,365) are AP tabulation, not yet certified.
## Incumbent
- **[[Ed Markey]]** (D) — senator since a 2013 special election, seeking a third full term; U.S. House 1976–2013. Green [[New Deal]] co-author with AOC; endorsed in the primary by Warren, Sanders, AOC, Pressley and the Sunrise Movement. The oldest senator Massachusetts has elected.
## How the nomination was decided
### Democratic primary (September 1, 2026)
| Candidate | % |
|---|---|
| **Ed Markey** | **64.9** |
| Seth Moulton | 35.1 |
- **[[Seth Moulton]]** — MA-06 representative since 2015, four [[Iraq War]] tours as a Marine, 2019 presidential candidate. Ran explicitly on age and generational turnover; the Boston Globe endorsed him. Last debate was August 20.
- No other Democrat qualified for the ballot (Rikleen and Gates, listed on earlier drafts of this page, did not make it).
### Republican primary (September 1, 2026)
- **[[John Deaton]]** — unopposed. Marine veteran, former military prosecutor, trial attorney and crypto-investor advocate; the 2024 nominee, who lost to Elizabeth Warren 59.8–40.0. Says he never voted for Trump. Massachusetts has not elected a Republican senator since [[Scott Brown]]'s 2010 special.
## General election
Markey vs. Deaton. Pre-primary general-election polling ran Markey +19 to +29 (UNH Aug 26: 49–30; UMass/WCVB Aug 17: 51–30); no post-primary poll exists yet. No general-election debate is scheduled; the June 16 WBZ debate was Moulton vs. Deaton (Markey declined). Early voting Oct 17–30. The third-party field is unsettled — verify against the certified list before naming anyone.

## Intel notes
- **The age argument has a ceiling and the primary found it.** Moulton ran the cleanest version of the "too old" case any challenger has run this cycle — a decorated veteran, no scandal, a Globe endorsement — and got 35%. Against an incumbent who is not visibly impaired and has the progressive institutional network behind him, the generational frame does not move a third of the electorate. Compare the cases where incumbents did fall this cycle (Cornyn, Bennet, Espaillat, Goldman, Cori Bush): each carried a second injury besides age.
- **Turnout asymmetry** is the number to file: Democrats over projection by ~10%, Republicans under by ~8%, in a state where the general is not in doubt. That is enthusiasm, not persuasion, and it is consistent with what the August primaries showed in Michigan and Wisconsin.
- **Moulton's exit** vacates MA-06 (Dan Koh won the Democratic primary per Cook — single-sourced here; confirm before building an MA-06 page) and removes one of the House's most vocal Democratic critics of the Biden-era leadership.
- **Deaton as the recurring Republican**: two Senate nominations in two cycles for a candidate who disclaims Trump is what the Massachusetts GOP bench looks like now.
