# Kentucky U.S. Senate 2026
## Snapshot
Open seat after Mitch McConnell's August 2025 retirement announcement — the first time Kentuckians will vote for a Senate seat without McConnell on the ballot since 1984. Three-way Republican primary between U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, former AG Daniel Cameron, and businessman Nate Morris has become the most expensive open-seat Senate primary in Kentucky history: **~$48 million in outside spending through Q1 2026**, of which $10 million came from Elon Musk through [[Fight for Kentucky]] alone. Polling has moved in Barr's direction through March–April. General-election nominee almost certainly Charles Booker (D) against whoever wins May 19; Kentucky remains Solid R at the presidential level but Booker has name ID from his 2022 Senate run.
## Incumbent
- **[[Mitch McConnell]]** (R) — senator since 1985, longest-serving Senate Republican leader in history (2007–2025). Announced retirement August 2025. Not running; has not endorsed a primary successor as of 2026-05-16.
## RESULT — Barr wins (May 19, 2026)
**Certified result: Andy Barr 60.5% (283,833) — Daniel Cameron 30.8% (144,592).** AP called the race at 7:00pm ET with only 5% reporting; the 64–28 split first recorded here was that early count. [[Nate Morris]] had withdrawn on May 1 and does not appear in the certified totals. *(Corrected 2026-10-01 against the Kentucky State Board of Elections certification.)*
Trump's **May 1** endorsement was decisive. Cameron, the McConnell-lane institutional candidate who led by 17 points in an October 2025 poll, lost by about 30 points. He is now 0-for-2 statewide (2023 gubernatorial loss to Beshear, 2026 primary loss to Barr). Morris, backed by $10M from Musk, withdrew the same day Trump endorsed Barr, at Trump's request, and endorsed Barr. Musk PAC money did not outlast a Trump endorsement for even a day. Trump nominated Morris as ambassador to Colombia on June 1.
**General election: Barr vs. [[Charles Booker]] (D), November 3, 2026.** Kentucky remains Solid R at presidential level, but Booker has 2022 name ID from his run against [[Rand Paul]]. Watch Q2 fundraising and whether the DSCC commits resources.
**Downstream:** Barr's KY-06 House seat (Lexington, Cook PVI R+10) is now open, triggering a scramble in Kentucky Republican politics.
## Trump endorsement (May 1, 2026)
Trump issued a "Complete and Total Endorsement" of **Andy Barr** on May 1 (an earlier version of this file said May 5; May 5 is when Cameron vowed to stay in), reshaping the race's final three weeks. The endorsement effectively crowns Barr as the MAGA lane winner and puts enormous pressure on Cameron's already-eroding support. Combined with Barr's polling lead, this likely seals the nomination unless Cameron can consolidate the non-Trump institutional vote — which is small in a Kentucky R primary. Morris withdrew the same day and endorsed Barr. **Primary is May 19 — 3 days away.**
## Challengers
### Republican primary (May 19, 2026)
- **[[Andy Barr]]** — U.S. Rep. (KY-06) since 2013, representing Lexington and the central Bluegrass. Leading the April 2026 Emerson poll at 28%. Positioning as the most pro-Trump candidate in the field; 38% of likely primary voters see him as most supportive of the Trump administration agenda (vs. 22% for Cameron, 21% for Morris).
- **[[Daniel Cameron]]** — former Kentucky Attorney General (2020–2024); lost 2023 gubernatorial race to [[Andy Beshear]]. Led polling through most of 2025 but Barr caught him in February 2026 Emerson; now trails by 7. co/efficient poll (October 2025) had Cameron +17 over Barr; the collapse has been notable.
- **[[Nate Morris]]** — businessman/entrepreneur (waste-management sector). Outsider lane. Polling 15% in April Emerson, 8% in the October 2025 co/efficient survey.
Three-way; 29% undecided in April Emerson.
### Democratic primary (May 19, 2026)
- **Charles Booker** — former state representative (D-Louisville), 2022 nominee against [[Rand Paul]]. Presumptive nominee; has gained on the Democratic side in the April Emerson primary survey.
## Polling (spring 2026, Emerson/FOX56)
- March 29–31, 2026 — Barr 28%, Cameron 21%, Morris 15%, undecided 29%
- February 2026 Emerson — Barr +4 shift from prior survey; Cameron lead eroding
- October 2025 co/efficient — Cameron 39%, Barr 22%, Morris 8% (pre-collapse baseline)
- **Post-Trump-endorsement**: No new public poll since the May 1 endorsement, but trajectory + endorsement historically worth 5–10 points in a contested R primary. Barr is the overwhelming favorite going into May 19.
## Ratings history
- **2026-09-23 — Cook: Solid R** (Cook print ratings)
- 2026-04 — Cook: Likely R
- Not expected to move unless Booker's D primary consolidation plus a chaotic R primary produces an unusual general
## Key dates

- 2026-11-03 — general election
## Money
- **~$48 million in outside spending** as of April 2026 — most expensive primary in Kentucky Senate history
- **Fight for Kentucky PAC** (pro-Morris): $14 million raised/spent in Q1 2026, **$10 million from Elon Musk**
- Pro-Barr and pro-Cameron super-PAC activity also running heavy; detailed breakdown in LPM/WVXU/WKMS April 20 joint coverage
- Candidate committee totals TBD from mid-April FEC pre-primary filings
- This race is one of the cleanest 2026 case studies for the Musk-era GOP funding architecture
## Intel notes
- **Trump endorsement (May 1) reshapes everything**: Barr was already leading in April polling; the Trump endorsement likely locks the race. Cameron's only path is consolidating institutional-R voters who actively prefer "not the Trump pick" — a vanishingly small lane in Kentucky. Morris's $10M Musk-backed campaign ended the day of the endorsement, when he withdrew.
- **Musk's $10M in Kentucky**: the largest single-donor plunge into an R primary where the candidate being backed is polling third. With Trump endorsing Barr (not Morris), Musk's investment looks like a failed bet or a pure spoiler play against Cameron. Watch how Musk-aligned media spins this post-May-19.
- **Barr's rise is trump-loyalty-coded**: the 38% "most pro-Trump" number reflects the successful messaging of Barr's House voting record vs. Cameron's more traditional AG profile. Trump's formal endorsement validates the trajectory.
- **McConnell no-endorsement watch**: McConnell still has not endorsed as of 5/16. The McConnell–Musk rupture and now Trump's Barr endorsement make any intervention pointless — McConnell appears to be letting the race play out without his fingerprint.
- **Booker general-election thesis**: Booker ran within 4 points of Paul in 2022 rural/urban expectations models; a non-Trump-cycle year with an unpopular GOP nominee *could* put this race into Lean R territory. Not a prediction, but watchable.
- **KY-06 downstream**: If Barr wins, his House seat (KY-06, Lexington) opens. While not competitive (Cook PVI R+10), it triggers a scramble in Kentucky Republican politics that could be interesting for party-ecosystem coverage.
