# Florida U.S. Senate 2026 Special ## Snapshot Special election to complete Marco Rubio's Class 3 term (resigned January 2025 to serve as Secretary of State). Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Attorney General **Ashley Moody** in January 2025; unlike Mullin's OK successor, Moody is running for the full remainder term. **CORRECTED 2026-08-31 — Vindman is not the nominee.** He lost the Aug 18 Democratic primary to state Rep. **[[Angie Nixon]]**, in the biggest upset of the late primary season. Cook rates Solid R. Seat winner must re-run in 2028 for a full 6-year term. The general election is **Moody vs. Nixon** — an all-woman contest, and Nixon would be the first Black person and the first Democratic woman to represent Florida in the Senate. ## The August 18 upset **Nixon won by 12 points having raised $975,000 against Vindman's $16.3 million** — a roughly 17-to-1 spending disadvantage. That number is the whole story and should be the first thing anyone reads on this page. Vindman, retired Lt. Col. and the key witness in Trump's first impeachment, ran explicitly on his Trump-resistance credentials and appears to have treated the primary as a formality. Nixon, a Jacksonville state representative and union organizer, ran a volunteer operation. It is the **first time a DSA member has won a major-party nomination for statewide office anywhere in the United States** — though see the caveat below, because the framing is already being contested. What makes it hard to read as a simple left-wing surge: on the same night, moderates Jared Moskowitz and [[Debbie Wasserman Schultz]] both dispatched their challenges easily. The night refused to produce a clean ideological narrative. Earlier polling on this page — April PPP had Moody 43, Vindman 40 — is now testing a matchup that will not happen, and is retained only as a record of where the race stood pre-primary. ## Incumbent (appointed) - **[[Ashley Moody]]** (R) — appointed U.S. Senator January 2025. Former Florida Attorney General (2019–2025); former Hillsborough County judge. Strong Trump-aligned profile. Running for the full remainder term (through January 2029). ## Republican primary (August 18, 2026) - **Ashley Moody** — appointed incumbent, running uncontested in the R primary ## Democratic primary (August 18, 2026) — WON BY NIXON - **[[Angie Nixon]]** ✅ **nominee** — Florida state Representative, union organizer, joined the Democratic Socialists of America during the campaign. Ran a volunteer-powered operation against a far larger war chest and won. - **[[Alexander Vindman]]** — retired Lt. Col., U.S. Army; former National Security Council director for European affairs. **Testified against Trump in the 2019 impeachment.** Formally qualified April 22, 2026 with $6.2M COH. Lost. ## Ratings history - 2026-08 — Cook: Solid R, unchanged by the primary result - 2026-04 — Cook: Solid R - Note: April PPP polling at R+3 tested Moody vs. Vindman. It does not transfer to Moody vs. Nixon, and no public polling of the actual matchup was available as of Aug 31. ## Key dates - 2026-06-12 — Florida filing deadline - 2026-08-18 — Florida primaries - 2026-11-03 — general election (special to complete term through January 2029) ## Money - Moody: **$7.13M available** (Q1 2026) - Vindman: **$6.2M COH** (Q1 2026) — extraordinary for a D in a Solid R Florida race, driven by national anti-Trump donor networks - NRSC: minimal deployment expected given rating - DSCC: treating as longshot test case; if polling holds, will invest selectively - Vindman's fundraising is the cycle's clearest "anti-Trump impeachment witness" donor test ## October 2026 — Vance makes the socialist attack national **2026-10-01:** Vice President [[JD Vance]], campaigning at Lakeland Linder International Airport in Lakeland, Florida for [[Byron Donalds]] and [[Ashley Moody]], called [[Angie Nixon]] a self-described socialist and said: > [!quote] JD Vance, Lakeland, Florida, October 1, 2026 > "Get the hell out of here. You don't belong in America." Nixon's response, given to CBS News Miami, declined the label and reframed the exchange around citizenship and policy: > [!quote] Angie Nixon, October 2026 > "It's very disrespectful. It's really disheartening, especially knowing that I come from folks who helped build this country, and my grandparents were sharecroppers in southern Georgia. … And I don't consider myself a socialist. I consider myself a lifelong Democrat who puts people over party, people over politics, and people over profit." Two things changed with this. First, the DSA attack line moved from Moody's campaign to the national ticket, which makes it a cycle-wide frame rather than a Florida one — continuous with [[Trump Faith and Freedom Coalition Speech]] and [[Trump Mount Rushmore Speech]]. Second, the attack's form shifted from *her politics are wrong* to *she does not belong in the country*, which is a different claim and drew its own coverage. > [!note] Correction to a secondary account > Heather Cox Richardson's letter of October 2, 2026 places these remarks in "South Florida." The rally was in **Lakeland**, in Polk County, central Florida — roughly 200 miles from Miami. The venue is an airport hangar, not a South Florida event. ## Outside-money log — FEC Form 24 notices ### Receipt date 2026-10-05 — $2,342,918.00 in one notice, from an Alabama address **[[Stronger Safer Nation]]** (C00898924), filing from **421 Office Park Drive, Mountain Brook, Alabama 35223**, disclosed the **largest single Form 24 notice on the day** nationwide. | File | Received | Expenditure date | Amount | Direction | Payee | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | **2016907** | 2026-10-05 | 2026-10-03 | **$1,464,323.75** | **oppose** [[Angie Nixon]] | Gen2 Solutions LLC | | **2016907** | 2026-10-05 | 2026-10-03 | **$878,594.25** | **support** [[Ashley Moody]] | Gen2 Solutions LLC | **Notice total $2,342,918.00** — 2 live lines, 0 memo, 0 amendment. **One vendor took the whole notice**, and Gen2 Solutions LLC is also a [[Senate Leadership Fund]] buyer, recorded on [[SLF 22.5M Senate IE October 2026]]. A second committee put **$50,753.92** into Florida on the same date (United for Florida's Future, not read at file level), and a third spending line names Thomas E. Chalifoux in a Florida House race. 🔴 **This is the fifth committee recorded on this site at 421 Office Park Drive, Mountain Brook, Alabama** — joining [[One Team Senate Majority]], [[Keep the Senate]], [[Civic Renewal Fund]] and [[Last Frontier PAC]]. The address is also the business address of the Crosby Ottenhoff Group, recorded on [[Alliance for a Better Future]]. The standing caution applies: an address is a compliance practice before it is a network — see [[Collins and Sununu Joint Fundraising Disclosures October 2026]]. > [!note] Aggregates not published as race totals > The two rows carry running aggregates of **$6,338,664.75** (anti-Nixon) and **$7,217,259.00** > (pro-Moody). The aggregate column's meaning is > filer-dependent and **may not be quoted as a race or committee total**. No Florida race total is derived > from them here. These figures are a **first read** of receipt date 2026-10-05. Sources: `docquery.fec.gov/dcdev/posted/2016907.fec` ## Intel notes - 🔴 **The donor-magnet thesis was tested and failed at the primary stage.** This page argued through the spring that Vindman's $6.2M without DSCC backing made the race a referendum on whether national anti-Trump networks transfer to a swing-state general. They never got the chance: the money did not survive contact with a Democratic primary electorate. **A national small-dollar network is not a local coalition** — that is the durable lesson, and it applies well beyond Florida. - **What Nixon's win is and isn't.** It is a volunteer operation beating a money operation 17-to-1 on spending. It is not straightforwardly a left surge — Moskowitz and Wasserman Schultz, both moderates, won comfortably the same night. - ⚠️ **The socialist label is already a contested attack, and the vault should be precise about it.** Nixon joined DSA in June 2026, during the campaign. She was **not a DSA-endorsed candidate**, and has said she does not agree with DSA on all issues. Moody's campaign has run attacks characterizing her as a DSA standard-bearer; PolitiFact and WLRN examined those attacks in late August and found them misleading. Record what she has actually said and done — Medicare for All, a $25 federal minimum wage, a billionaire tax, state-provided childcare, tuition-free public college, student-debt cancellation — rather than the label either campaign wants applied. - **R+3 in an R+13 state** was the spring story, but that number belongs to a matchup that no longer exists. Do not carry it forward as evidence about Moody vs. Nixon. - **The 2-year-term dynamic**: because the winner serves only through January 2029, the race doesn't guarantee a 6-year commitment. Moody wins → runs again in 2028. Vindman wins → also runs in 2028. The "fresh back-to-back Senate race" math disincentivizes major outside spending. - **Ashley Moody's AG record**: aggressive anti-Democratic AG actions (Trump-era SCOTUS litigation, opioid settlements, election-integrity rhetoric) will be Vindman's attack surface. Moody's defense: law-and-order framing, prosecutor-credentials positioning. - **Rubio → Secretary of State → return?**: Rubio's State Department role is not permanent. If Rubio departs State before 2028, he is the presumed favorite to take the Class 3 seat regardless of Moody's 2026 outcome. This shapes Moody's incentives on party-loyalty votes. ## Related KB entities - [[Ashley Moody]] — appointed incumbent - [[Angie Nixon]] — Democratic nominee - [[Alexander Vindman]] — lost the Aug 18 primary - [[Marco Rubio]] — former seat holder, now Secretary of State - [[Ron DeSantis]] — FL Governor who made the appointment - [[Angie Nixon]] — Democratic nominee - [[JD Vance]] — carried the socialist attack to the national ticket, 2026-10-01 - TBD: 2019 Trump impeachment witnesses (Concepts/Historical) ## Content leads - **Blog**: "Alex Vindman's $6M Anti-Trump Bet" — whistleblower-to-candidate pipeline and what it says about 2026 donor networks - **Data**: Democratic Senate fundraising in Solid R states 2022-2026 — is this an anomaly or a trend? - **[[YouTube]]**: Moody vs. Vindman profile — two Florida political types running on opposite views of 2019 - **Breaking**: PPP polling replication in June — if Vindman stays within 5, rating shift is coming ## Outside spending ### Outside-money log — FEC Form 24 notices ### Receipt date 2026-10-07 — [[AB PAC]] $2,504,647.46 for [[Angie Nixon]], all billboards | Committee | File | Amount | Direction | Payees | |---|---|---|---|---| | **[[AB PAC]]** | **2018051** | **$2,504,647.46** | **support** [[Angie Nixon]] | [[AdQuick]] / [[Lamar Companies]] / Target Platform | 🔴 **Read this against the primary.** [[Angie Nixon]] won the August 18 Democratic primary having raised **$975,000** against Vindman's $16.3 million.
