Republican Rep. [[Andy Barr]], who took it from Democrat Ben Chandler in 2012 and has held it since 2013, ran for the U.S. Senate seat [[Mitch McConnell]] is vacating instead ([[KY-Sen-2026]]). Donald Trump carried the district by **15 points** in 2024, yet by Election Day forecasters had moved it from Safe Republican to a **toss-up**. > [!tip] Why it's called a bellwether > - **It reports first.** Kentucky's polls close at 6 p.m. Eastern, among the earliest in the country, and the whole district is in the Eastern time zone, so this is expected to be one of the first competitive House races decided on election night. > - **It is a Trump +15 seat that Democrats are seriously contesting.** Democrats do not need it to win the House. That is what makes it a test: if they win it, or come close, analysts read that as a sign of a large Democratic night everywhere; a comfortable Republican win would suggest the polls and forecasts overstated the Democrats. Erin Covey of the [[Cook Political Report]] called it "the bellwether for whether or not we're definitely looking at a big blue wave." > - **It mixes city and country.** Fayette County (Lexington) supplies the most votes but tends to count more slowly; smaller rural counties often report first and can show early how close the race is. The Kentucky political journalist Al Cross singled out **Madison County** as the bellwether within the bellwether, to be compared against 2018, the district's last competitive House race. > - **A governor has bet on it.** Gov. [[Andy Beshear]], a possible 2028 presidential candidate who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, campaigned and steered super PAC money into flipping it. A Dembo win would be read partly as his win. ## The candidates **Ralph Alvarado (Republican)** is a physician. He was a Kentucky state senator from 2015 to 2023, the first Hispanic member of Kentucky's General Assembly, and Gov. Matt Bevin's running mate on the losing 2019 ticket. He then served as Tennessee's health commissioner from January 2023 until July 2025. Donald Trump and House Speaker [[Mike Johnson]] endorsed him on May 1, 2026, and he won the May 19 primary with 56.5 percent. LEX18 noted that he talked about the Trump endorsement often in the primary and much less in the general election; in the closing days he campaigned with Barr. He has run on health care, including a rural-hospital fund in the 2025 tax law. **[[Zach Dembo]] (Democrat)** is a former federal prosecutor in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and a former policy adviser and legislative director for Gov. Beshear. LEX18 also describes him as a Lexington native, Navy veteran and former teacher. He won a crowded May 19 primary with 39.6 percent, ahead of state Rep. Cherlynn Stevenson's 31.5 percent, and campaigned against the administration's tariffs and the war with Iran. Also on the ballot: independent Jay Bowman and Kentucky Party candidate Pete Lynch. ## The numbers before Election Day - **Ratings:** the Cook Political Report rated the race a Toss Up. According to Ballotpedia, Inside Elections rated it Tilt Republican and Sabato's Crystal Ball and Decision Desk HQ Lean Republican. - **History:** Barr won 51.0 percent to 47.8 percent over Democrat Amy McGrath in 2018, the district's last close race, and won easily in 2022 and 2024. - **Polls:** every public poll Newsweek found was Democratic-sponsored or Democratic-linked, all showing Dembo ahead: Public Policy Polling 47–41, Lake Research Partners 48–45 (Sept. 30–Oct. 4), and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's own survey 46–40. There was no independent or Republican public poll. - **Money:** the Center Square, citing federal filings, reported Dembo had raised more than $3.2 million to Alvarado's $2.3 million. On the outside-money side, [[No Going Back PAC]] split its Kentucky ads between supporting Alvarado and opposing Dembo in identical amounts, bought through [[MHB Media Inc]]. - **Early vote:** Louisville Public Media reported that early in-person voting in Fayette, Scott and Madison counties doubled the 2022 midterm totals, with a larger Democratic share. ## Result > [!success] Called: Zach Dembo (D) wins, a Democratic pickup > The Associated Press projected on election night, November 3, 2026, that Democrat [[Zach Dembo]] defeated Republican Ralph Alvarado, flipping the seat [[Andy Barr]] held since 2013 in a district Trump carried by about 15 points. Vote totals are unofficial until Kentucky certifies the result. Source: [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/live/midterm-election-2026#000001a1-a48e-db3e-a7bd-ffffaa670000).
